2002 Renault Laguna Dynamique 1.9 dCi 120 turbo diesel

Summary:

Well equipped car, spoiled by poor reliability

Faults:

Engine management light comes on with limp home mode, stopping the car and restarting usually fixed this (this has been fixed by replacing the glow plugs, 3 of which were faulty).

Starter motor spins noisily without actually turning the engine (has only done this once since the above repair).

Tyre pressure monitors... say no more! Apparently Peugeot use an identical system, but theirs works!

Gearbox (6 speed manual) failed at 34,000 miles, replaced under warranty. The differential collapsed, pushing a drive shaft out, which also damaged a brake disc & brake caliper. That explains why the ABS light came on and the brake pedal fell to the floor when the gearbox failed! The new gearbox has now completed 32,000 miles and is starting to whine in 3rd, 4th & 5th gears. Dealer says there is nothing wrong with the gearbox...

Clutch pedal developed a mind of its own by constantly changing the bite point, usually while stationary in gear waiting to pull away. Eventually the clutch pedal goes flat to the floor; just got car back, having had the clutch master cylinder replaced.

Intercooler cracked (air side, not coolant side) causing a loss of power; it was replaced under warranty.

Keycard failed, replaced under warranty.

Alloy wheels buckled on the inside; these wheels do not like potholes! Also, two different tyre dealers have commented that the wheels (undamaged ones) appeared to be 'oval'. This was observed when balancing them, this doesn't appear to affect the car at all.

General Comments:

I have a 2002 1.9dCi. Fortunately for me it is a company car because it has suffered many faults.

Although I have experienced some really inconvenient breakdowns, some irritating minor faults and some poor dealer service, I like the car a lot.

I chose it for its safety features, its low CO emissions (= low BIK tax), its power (3.0 V6 equaling torque plus 50+ MPG can't be bad), its generous equipment (equivalent spec Mondeo was £2K dearer), and it is a handsome car. I like the way it handles, and its space and comfort.

One thing about frequent visits to the garage is that I have had plenty of opportunity to drive other cars. I must say that I always enjoy getting back into my Laguna.

My experience with my 1.9dci more or less mirrors this. I have had mine for two and a half years and covered 98000 miles. I love the comfort and styling, but reliability has been a major concern. 6 tyre pressure sensors, new turbo and intercooler, new throttle potentiometer, rear suspension bushes, front exhaust, engine management light has come on approx 9 times and all power is sapped... the list is endless!! Just as well this is a company car! I am now up for renewal and have chosen the Toyota Avensis T3X - utter class and unrivalled reliability.

These cars are a nightmare. Avoid at all costs. You have been warned.

Does anyone know why I am getting black soot out of the exhaust on my Renault Laguna hatchback 1.9 dCi, and what causes over fueling?

Need help.

2002 Renault Laguna Initiale 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

A highly-equipped heap of fertiliser

Faults:

Gearbox bearing failed within first month

Cruise control failed at 2 months old, fault could not be found, still fails occasionally

Turbo pipe fell off at 6 months

Air filter seals replaced at 9 months

Airbag warning lights kept coming on during braking, problem resolved itself

Inter-cooler and turbo relief valve replaced after 18 months

Radio cover often refuses to close

Sat Nav cannot count the number of turn-offs on roundabouts, is very late giving directions and often suggests strange routes that are longer than need be for no apparent reason.

Fuel consumption dropped during last year from max 54mpg, average 39 mpg to max 42mpg, average 36 mpg, but no fault found by dealer.

General Comments:

The equipment levels cannot be faulted, if only everything worked.

Apart from regularly needing repair, the most annoying thing has been the dealer's attitude. If the cannot find a fault on their computer, it does not exist, and even if you prove the car is faulty they do not know how to fix it.

When the gearbox bearing failed, causing the car to jump out of 4th gear on overrun, it took me 6 weeks and as many visits to the dealer before they admitted there was a fault.

I've had the same problem as you with dealers. My Laguna cuts out randomly, and visit after visit they just tell me nothing is wrong. I have written to Renault UK, but no reply as of yet. I've been to the dealer aprox 16 times (for a year old car) and they are always unfriendly and unhelpful. Looking at other reviews I would say 80% of Laguna owners would agree with this as well as the 'if the computer says its OK... then its OK'

My 1.9 Dci 120 only does 42-43mpg on the motorway in light traffic in a straight line, but the computer says everything find. Most petrol cars will do more than 40mpg on the motorway, these Lagunas are supposed to do near 60mpg extra urban.

Pathetic!
