2002 Renault Laguna expression 1.8

Summary:

Good reasonably priced stylish motor

Faults:

No problems at all with vehicle, its performance has been absolutely faultless. I think the car looks great, is really comfortable, smooth and responsive.

General Comments:

Had two previous Renaults, R8/1100 and 17TL, 17 went well, but rotted away faster than melting snow!

2002 Renault Laguna Initiale 3l V6

Summary:

A comfortable high performing car

Faults:

The card key entry system has been problematic, but the dealer has changed the cards and they are fine now.

Warning lights for the air bags have illuminated without there being a fault present.

Tyre pressure indicators have been faulty.

Only serious fault was the failure of 2 high tension coils; this was dealt with efficiently by the dealer.

General Comments:

I travel a lot of miles in the car and it is very comfortable on long drives.

The sound system is excellent.

The Sat Nav is a really useful extra, although the screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight.

Passengers in the rear have complained about seat belts being difficult to fasten.

2002 Renault Laguna Privilige 1.9DCI

A well designed drivers car let down by build quality

Faults:

Two faulty tire sensors so far.

Exhaust needed replacing after 40,000m.

Head lamp computer replaced.

Ignition key-card replaced.

Turbo unit blew at 53,000m.

General Comments:

The car itself is a well finished car.

It handles well and is more responsive than the 2.0 petrol equivalent.

Very spacious.

Finish a long journey feeling refreshed.

Perhaps too many gadgets which can fail.

2002 Renault Laguna Priveledge Sport 2.2 turbo diesel

Summary:

Great car, but worried about gearbox failures

Faults:

Initial problem with Sat.Nav.from new. Sorted by dealer.

Tyre sensors operate when cold. Dealer reset the parameters. I still get the occasional tyre warning which I leave until the tyre warms up.

Car currently off the road for two weeks whilst the dealer investigates what appeared to be a low moan from the front o/s wheel when turning right. Also a slight noise on a left turn. Dealer checked bearing, drive shaft and brake and eventually decided it was the differential on the gearbox. Replaced gearbox for £2000. There was still a noise so I await their findings.

General Comments:

The dealer appears to be frank about Renault's practice of putting out new models for the owners to find faults. Amazed to hear that there is an apparent fault on the gearboxes as differentials eventually give way, grating on the box mainly due to the fact that "Renault have increased the power/torque of engines without the necessary improvement in gearboxes".

When I asked why not a general recall, was told that they prefer to replace with what I hope is an uprated gearbox, otherwise I will be out of warranty by the time the next one goes.

"Is there a problem on the number of gearboxes failing?" "Yes".

Dealers appear to be left with the problem of sorting out Renault's problems without an adequate data bank of faults from Renault. e.g. no information or help on what my problem is.

Dealer is left with transferring parts from a model one of the salesmen has on a try and test basis.

I am satisfied with the dealer, but amazed that there is no national data bank of faults.

The Laguna is the most comfortable drive I have had and has performed well up to now. Returns 38mpg towing a caravan.

Had a gearbox problem with an N Reg. Laguna at 70,000. The only problem I had.

Renault do "know" about the faults, but do nothing until your vehicle fails. If it does not, they get away with it. I am waiting for a "known" fault to happen after the warranty expires, then it will be time for a threat of legal action. Compare the attitude for recalls in the USA (NHTSA.gov) with that in Europe.

The 02 Laguna 1600 my father owns has to be the most troublesome car ever made. I have been driving it for six weeks and in that time I have replaced 2 tyre sensors, one steel wheel, 2 front electric window motors (thank god back is manual), 2 drive shafts, bottom gearbox mount twice and back bushings. The clutch is ready to pack it in and the gearbox has started rattling!

My father had all this work done about 4000 miles before I started driving it!

Stick with Japanese cars; might be a little costly to purchase, but the reliability more than makes up for it. I have been driving a sixteen year old Toyota Corolla diesel with over 200k on it for three years, and all I have replaced is filters and belts!
