1997 Renault Megane RT 1.4

Summary:

Reliable, comfortable, all round excellent value

Faults:

Brake pads needed replacing (wear and tear)

Slight leak from roof aerial

Occasional juddering (inexplicable really as it doesn't happen often)

General Comments:

Well I have had this car since Oct 2006, and in that time the car has cost very little.

It failed its last MOT in August on a number plate light. It's 10 years old and it is still going strong.

I do a fair bit of mileage in the car - roughly around 50 miles a day. I love it. It is a great car to drive, comfortable, has everything I want - electric windows, CD player, heaters that work... etc.. The only slight issue is the fact that it is a little underpowered for a medium sized car, but that doesn't matter really - unless you are constantly doing uphill driving etc where you have to change down - it could get irritating.

It has been the best car I have owned, not that I have owned many - one being a brand new Citroen C2, which had been in the garage over a dozen times.

I would definitely recommend a Renault - I had a Clio before this and that was great too; really responsive and fun to drive. The Megane has nearly 90000 miles on now and it never ceases to amaze me how it just plods along, not missing a beat, even on the coldest of mornings.

1997 Renault Megane RTe 1.6

Summary:

Safe, comfortable and good value for money all round

Faults:

Leak that originates from the sunroof, due to the drain pipe being blocked, causing water to overflow, go down the bodywork and into the passenger foot well.

Rattling coming from exhaust - not much of a problem, neither was it a problem to fix.

Remote central locking/immobiliser working intermittently due to a loose connection in the key - fixed with solder.

I previously had another Megane, exactly the same spec and engine. I had the same sunroof leak with that as well - although I had thousands and thousands of trouble free driving.

General Comments:

The RTe model comes with a good selection of extras and is an extremely practical car. It is nice to drive and is comfortable. One of my favourite things about driving it is the flappy panel stereo.

Brakes and steering are good and the car has a very good safety record - especially for side impact protection, which is one of the main reasons why I bought another one, having swapped my old Megane previously with my brother.

1997 Renault Megane Paris 1.4

Summary:

Reliable workhorse that will go on forever

Faults:

Very few things, the rear lights where ghosting (15 quid to sort),heater matrix went last year, this isn't a problem, doesn't effect the running of the car at all! That's pretty much it.

General Comments:

I've done nearly 100K miles in it now and it's still going strong (touch wood).

I'm 6'2 and I'm perfectly comfortable sitting in the front or the back.

Granted, its not the quickest car in the world, but when I bought this car I was just looking for a reliable workhorse, and that's what I got!

I've been on several very long journeys from Edinburgh to Devon a few times and its always got me there no problem with great fuel economy.

1997 Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 fidji 1.6

Summary:

A top affordable coupe!

Faults:

Problems getting first gear when approaching junctions.

Plastic knob to push seat forward snapped off!

General Comments:

Well its my first car and I love it!

I've found the car fairly quick, but you do need to take it over 3000 rpm to get the best from it.

It's a very nice car to drive, but can get a bit hairy through country lanes if you push it too hard and that's with Goodyear tyres on!

The rear seats aren't as bad as they look, well I had no complaints from my friend who is 5'11 and he was in the back for almost an hour!

Insurance is very good for a coupe even the 2.0l 16v isn't overly expensive!

All in all it's a good value car when you buy it at this age, but I advise if it does need a service or any work doing avoid Renault dealers if you can and get a private mechanic or do the work yourself with a trusty Haynes manual!
