A mediocre secondary family car

Faults:

The boot release button is very hard to push.

The driving position is cramped and uncomfortable over long distances.

The car is quick but the handling is very poor due to the small wheels.

A tyre "bursting for no apparent reason"; it's probably the TYRE's fault, and NOT the car's... no??

1997 Renault Megane RT Sport 1.6

Summary:

Never again - A bad experience!

Faults:

This car was an endless list of problems:

First of all after 2 days, the electric sunroof jammed then a week later the catalytic converter went (luckily both were under warranty). The dealer replaced both, but 2 months later, the cat went again (supposed a faulty part)!

Next, the rocker cover gasket went, leaking oil all over the engine, followed by the water pump, which meant I had to get the car towed back to the dealer!

To be fair, the dealer was excellent on all occasions, but to have this much trouble with a 1997 car was getting a little beyond a joke! Needless to say, I only had the car for a total of 9 months, before buying a Saxo VTR.

General Comments:

The Megane looks the part, with loads of features as standard, and is quite comfortable, but I can't believe that so many things could go wrong to such a new car - what would it have been like in another couple of years?

1997 Renault Megane RT 1.6 8V

Summary:

Good car - poor engine

Faults:

After having the car about 6 months, a rattling noise started to develop from the engine when pulling. It was later diagnosed as being big-end bearings costing being about £2000, of which Renault wouldn't pay anything because the car wasn't purchased from a Renault authorised dealer. Due to the car having done less than 20,000 at the time - a problem of this magnitude is pretty outrageous.

General Comments:

I purchased a second Megane from a Renault dealer, because I liked the car so much (PLEASE READ THOSE COMMENTS - IT MAY AFFECT YOUR BUYING DECISION!!!!)

1997 Renault Megane RTE Sport 1.6 petrol

Faults:

PAS hydraulic pipe leaking (£291).

Oil leak from cylinder head gasket (£173).

Brake discs scored (£210).

Backbox corroded (£120, only 2 years old).

Faulty indicator switch (£92).

Faulty rear wiper switch (£92).

Loose connection on starter motor (have to get the bonnet up and reseat the connector now and then).

Exhaust rattles since it was new.

General Comments:

I've had this car since new, it's done 27,000 miles and I've taken care of it.

This car has proved to be a complete pile of junk and I will NEVER buy a Renault again. The Dealer has been completely incompetent and they should be ashamed of themselves.

1997 Renault Megane RT 1.6

Faults:

Oil leaks from various places in engine, indicator arm snapped. Grinding from driveshafts?

General Comments:

Car felt older than 12,000 miles, stable at speed, economical, fragile trim, rough engine, unfriendly dealer.

P/x'ed it for a Nissan Primera, all my problems have gone!

1997 Renault Megane Cabriolet 2.0 16v petrol

Faults:

I have had the car 18 months and the car steers towards the left and therefore caused wear on the front left hand side tyre which has had to be replaced.

The car also started to backfire which was due to a faulty coil which has now been replaced.

For 26 thousand miles all four brake pads have now been replaced, which the never happened when I had my peugeot 205 CTI!

General Comments:

Performance is excellent, but wear and tear are costly for a car with 26 thousand miles on the clock.

I have had my megane cabriolet since 2005 oh dear nothing, but trouble in and out of the garage. Electric ignition replaced once now going again, electric window drivers side needed fixing, seat belts twisted-the most concerning thing is the fact that my car is only two years old and the front seats are very worn, I am a small lady and only have passengers occasionally.Would not recomend this car to anyone

1997 Renault Megane RTE Sport 1.6 petrol

Faults:

After 15,000 miles, nothing gone wrong.

General Comments:

Although it has a SPORT label, it is only a 1.6 engine, so not fast, but she looks good, handles good, and is comfortable.

One minor problem is the dashboard layout, the top row of indicator lights aren't visible, you have to duck down to see them.

1997 Renault Megane RT 1.4 petrol

Faults:

Nothing yet, touch wood.

General Comments:

Love this car! It was a step up from my previous and only other car, a 1.1 Fiesta, so the engine size and general comfort was a huge step upwards. Great touches include the radio control on the steering column and automatic sunroof.

Can't really comment on the reliability of the car as it's only three months old, but it goes like a rocket!
