1999 Renault Megane 1.6

Summary:

Immobiliser trouble

Faults:

Immobiliser problems like so many others.

Trying to charge me £600 for new control panel for it???

Only bought it for £1000, being R reg.

Given me an emergency code, but ain't gonna last.

General Comments:

Don't get an immobiliser on this car, coz when it goes wrong, you are gonna be stuck. Fair play though, even the garage couldn't nick it without the right kit..

Bless all who shall ride in one, but pray this fault doesn't happen.

I have this model; the hazard light comes on constantly and I have had to take out the fuse which also disables your indicators. I had an electrical repair done and it did not work. Does anyone have any suggestions please?

1999 Renault Megane Sport Alize Hatchback 1.6 16v

Summary:

Superb Car!!, Sporty looking, and excellent all round features

Faults:

A leakey ariel, this was fixed easily by taking it off and putting some sealer around the hole.

General Comments:

The car grips the road well. However in wet conditions the back end has a tendency to slide out if you are cornering hard.

The interior is nice and airy, it is also very comfortable with the sport seats that come with the 'sport' models.

MPG is good, my average is 35MPG, however I drive more aggressive than most, On a good day the MPG goes up to 45 - 50MPG.

Yes, I have the same model and it is really good, I find the MPG the same as yours.

I have had the fan belt tensioners wear out though and they were very expensive from Main dealer!

1999 Renault Megane Coupe Sport 1.6 16v

Summary:

Excellent value sports coupe

Faults:

Driver's side electric window crunched when it was lowered and could not be raised. The cable had snapped and was replaced.

Driver's side control for passenger electric window failed, passenger side still works though.

New front and rear exhaust sections, original 'cat' still OK.

General Comments:

I bought this car from my brother in-law who purchased it as the demo model from new. I knew it had been looked after and it was trade price. It's a good looking car and fairly discreet (in black anyway), and it has proved to be very economical to run. Insurance is cheap (group 8), it will do around 35mpg around town and it has been very reliable with only minor problems.

It may not handle as well as a Saxo VTR or Fiesta Zetec-S, but it's just as quick and you get more car for your money. It's fully loaded with electrical equipment with a good stereo; safety equipment is good too with 4 airbags.

On the downside there's not much room inside, especially the 2 back seats and the front does not have a lot of headroom (mainly because of the sunroof). The boot is reasonably sized, but has a small opening so cannot take larger items.

Despite being a 16 valve, the engine does not thrive on revs and becomes harsh as you approach the low 6,000-rpm limit. It's also a bit loud when you're cruising at about 80-85mph showing around 4,000-rpm. The gearbox is very sweet, with a positive shift, however the steering could do with more feel and a slightly quicker rack.

I own a 1.6i 16V Renault Scenic 2001 and a Saxo VTR struggled to get past me and I got a very surprised look off him when he did overtake me at like 100 mph.

1999 Renault Megane RT 1.6 16v

Summary:

Love my Megane and wouold definately buy Renault again

Faults:

The rubber rear exhaust bracket went brittle and snapped off. This was replaced during a Major Service for £8.

When the in-car fan is switched from recirculation to fresh air, the motor that operates the flap makes a loud knocking sound for 5 seconds. This is going to cost £380 (with labour) at a Dealership to put right.

As with most cars, the digital read out for external temperature is useless. It fluctuates between 59*c and the actual temperature.

General Comments:

I paid £4,000 for the car which had a full service history, one lady owner from new and had been kept in immaculate condition inside and out.

All the electrics other than mentioned are still in good working order. All original window seals show sign of aging and paintwork/plastics are still in immaculate condition.

The ride is a little firm, but the suspension is geared up for a more sporty ride.

Handling is superb, I have to say. Very responsive steering and does corner exceedingly well.

Braking is sharp and the ABS is well balanced and not too invasive.

Speed is good, I've had 110mph out of the car and it still feels like there is more to come. Feels a little wriggly when you hit the 95+ mark.

Acceleration is smooth and more than capable of out performing most cars of the same engine size on the road. I particularly like breezing past 1.9D Peugeots... The drivers look so upset when you do and they can see the 1.6 badge on the side of the Renault.
