2003 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.9 dCi turbo diesel

Summary:

Has serious reliability issues!

Faults:

ERG valve went and was replaced.

Turbo blew and was replaced.

Diagnostic socket had to be re soldered, and brain required replacing and was replaced. All 2 months after buying - fortunately covered by dealers 3 month warranty.

The front mudflaps came off on ramps.

General Comments:

It is a fast safe car to drive, when it is not getting fixed in the Renault garage (about a 1/4 of time I have had it)

2003 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Great family car, but make sure you get a warranty!

Faults:

Gearbox failed at only 20,000 miles when it was only 4 years old. Costs including a new clutch came to £2,400 inc. labour. After complaining to the dealership, they got Renault to contribute 80% of the costs. At this point I had owned the car for 12 months and 3 weeks, therefore, only 3 weeks out of warranty! After a fuss I managed to gain a further £150 contribution from the dealership, leaving around £350 to pay.

Good result or bad result... What do you think?

To add, in 1 year of owning this car I had to take it back 3 times for repairs to electrical faults, including a new coil and a new regulator. I needed a new regulator as my windows would randomly go down, even when the car was locked and had no power. One time I came back to my car in a car park and noticed it was open! Lucky escape apart from the frost inside. After the windows opening, they would not go back up until the care had been left for a few hours.

Seems silly to say after all that has happened, but I do still like this car.

General Comments:

The car is very comfortable and spacious for a hatchback, and I love the boot space.

However, be aware that electrical failures often occur, especially in bad weather.

2003 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Good Looking, good driving car that is let down by its electrical problems

Faults:

A rear electric window has failed.

Squeaky brakes.

Front passenger seat panel fell off.

Gear knob has faded from silver to a dingey yellow.

General Comments:

This car is quite quick for a 1.4, and it sticks to the road like glue when you go around corners, thanks to the extremely wide tyres.

Mechanical reliability so far has been faultless.

Quality of interior plastics is excellent.

Car feels substantial when you drive it.

The car is extremely comfortable, with loads of kit for the cash and great seats.

Much quicker than a similarly powered Golf/Focus.

Electrics sometimes are a bit scary.

Best looking car in its class by miles and miles.

Lovely ride.

2003 Renault Megane dynamique 1.6

Summary:

Good drive, poor build and reliability

Faults:

Airbag faulty light flashing only months after purchasing.

Rattles in passenger door and hatch lock.

Electric window broke earlier this year.

Recalled by Renault earlier this year due to possible brake malfunction, all clear given.

Currently in garage with engine management light flashing and loss of performance.

General Comments:

A good car to drive and comfortable.

Dealer support poor (two local dealerships closed within 18 months)

Bought a nearly new car to avoid costly and time consuming faults, but buying this one has been a mistake.

2003 Renault Megane expression 1.5 diesel

Summary:

Would not buy another one

Faults:

Window dropped on first day when locking the car. Upgrades have been done to window electrics, but rear window which is never used drops by itself. Renault deny faults are inherent with car. We believe they are inherent as many upgrades have taken place. The windows drop for no reason and costs £350 per window to fix. Renault will not accept bad design and bad quality control as cuse to failures.

The same problem of window failure is common on Clios. The regulatour just fails and snaps through bad design. We are on our third drivers window regulator.

Anyone else suffered with window regulator failure.

General Comments:

Good car apart from French electrics.

It is caused by water getting into the window regulator connector. The water shorts out the anti-pinch mechanism and the window opens on its own.

I hit this site in Google searching on "Megane window problem" since yesterday just as I was locking the car, I got exactly that problem. I don't buy the "water" explanation as this is the middle of the longest dry spell I can remember, and also it hasn't been washed lately.

My problem seems very similar to the one described - one of the unused back windows suddenly opens and can't be closed. It must be a design fault.
