2004 Renault Megane VVT Dynamique Convertible 1.6

Summary:

Absolutely great, remarkable!

Faults:

The car would not start at first demand (this has only happened the once and rectified itself once the card was removed and re-inserted)

The interior is quite hard to clean and the trim around the radio has worn slightly.

Also there is a leak from the seal at the driver side door, although the manufacturer has assured me this will be mended.

General Comments:

This car is so comfortable and an absolute pleasure to drive, it is so stylish, it makes me smile every morning when I leave the house for work.

Could be quicker. Maybe I will get a two litre next.

A Renault Megane Dynamique Convertible at 19. What will I have next?

Just bought a Renault Megane convertible 1.6 - does anyone know how it handles in bad weather, i.e. ice, snow etc - would love to hear any comments.

2004 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.5 dCi

Summary:

Really nice car let down by the odd electrical gremlin

Faults:

Sunroof refused to open or close - twice. Now fixed.

Keyless entry system

Electric window (rear). It dropped like a stone and wouldn't go up again.

One-touch electric window (front). Seems to have fixed itself.

Dreadful brake squeal. Unresolved.

Electric door mirror (intermittent fault). MAde a strange buzzing sound.

Digital dashboard window/panel (intermittent fault)

Auto wipers (intermittent fault).

Rear wiper (intermittent fault). Seems to have fixed itself.

General Comments:

Despite having had some problems I really like this car. It has many good qualities and it has never broken down. And the dealer has been extremely competent in fixing things. I have not reported all the faults because they don't always occur and I shall be buying another Megane soon.

The turbo diesel engine is an amazing piece of engineering. It's fast, economical and very refined.

It is extremely comfortable, the seats are very supportive on long journeys and the fabric is wearing well.

This car has masses of character, it is a very pleasant car to drive and I have no regrets buying it.

Overall I am a satisfied owner. However Renault need to spend a bit more effort ensuring all the electrics are robust. In my opinion they still have some work to do in this area. It will be interesting to see how 2006 Megane compares.

Renault Megane Dynamique purchased new July 2003

Problem experienced: difficulty in starting - engine turns over, but does not fire; immediately stalls; if revs maintained starts off running roughly. Intermittent fault - six attempts this year to remedy fault, but fault occurs again

-has occurred again 27/8. No other problems, but this fault makes the vehicle unreliable. Renault UK advised.

2004 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.4 petrol

Summary:

An ideal family car

Faults:

Air conditioning malfunctioned at 7,000 miles.

Dashboard trim began to crumble at 17,000 miles.

General Comments:

So far the Megane has been a dependable and practical family car.

With just a 1.4 petrol engine, performance has hardly represented the cutting edge of excitement.

Interior is comfortable, but feels flimsy.

Fuel economy and all other running costs are relatively low.

Was great value at £10,700 and has so far proved to be worth every penny.

2004 Renault Megane Dynamique 1.4

Summary:

Nice, but very costly on petrol consumption

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with it, but the driver side electric mirror seems to change position over night???

General Comments:

The car its self is very good. It is comfortable smooth and well put together.

The interior is of good quality and looks like it will wear well.

This car is built for someone who loves visiting the petrol garage. I have never, ever come across such a small engined car with such a massive capacity for guzzling fuel.

I filled the tank with £53 of petrol and got 320 miles out of it. That was a combination of motorway and town driving.

A friend of mine at work has a 3 litre Jaguar and she gets better economy than that.

I drive it very gently and have used Redex to try and improve matters with little luck.

On the rare times I have put my foot down, it picks up speed like it is towing a bus.

I took it to a Renault garage for a diagnostic and they said that there is nothing wrong with the car. He showed me a Renault hand book which stated that I can expect to get 34 miles mpg combined and 40.4 mpg on a motorway.

According to my calculations I am getting 24 - 26 mpg.

I bought the car without doing my homework. I wanted good mpg as I have to travel a lot. I wrongly thought a new 1.4 engine would be frugal. How wrong I was. I should have avoided this car like the plague.

I couldn't agree more! I have a Megane 55 plate 1.6 auto and it's an absolute nightmare for guzzling petrol!

It's a big comfort to know that someone else is feeling the Megane strain. My mate has a 2.6 V6, we both went to the petrol station running on empty mine cost £49 to fill and my mates only £45! It's insane that such small engines can guzzle so much petrol! I too am not exactly a boy racer and have been very careful to try & conserve fuel, but other than turning the car off and leaving it at a standstill, I don't know what else to do???! Renault are having it in again to investigate and at the moment I'm blaming the failing gearbox, for it's footballer's-wives style petrol habbits!

Am a bit worried that a 1.4 manual is having a similar problem though, although it might be due to the size & weight of the Megane that means the 1.4 engine is struggling and guzzling?

I think if it's not resolved with Renault this time round and I don't see a drastic change, it's time to get rid... the guys at the petrol station now know me by name and starting to give me strange looks as though I keep coming back because I have a crush on them, spending £10-15 each time just for the sake of it!
