1997 Rover - Austin 100 Ascot SE 1.1i petrol

Summary:

Economical, and sometimes reliable

Faults:

I've not had too much trouble, but more than most cars would have.

The main things really are the Hydragas suspension; it's a swine for going down.

The handbrake light wouldn't go off.

Rattling from the engine.

Swaying at high speeds.

There's also a lack of braking power for a small car. I thought any brakes wouldn't have trouble stopping it. The car is dangerous. God help you if you crash it.

The car is temperamental. When you put injection cleaner in the fuel tank, it doesn't seem to react well to it.

I've also had to have my clutch and gear box replaced, but apart from that lot, it's been a good little car. Just a shame it couldn't have been designed better. It's got the potential to be better. I think the old Metro was a lot better to drive. It's just that this one looks newer and better.

My advice to all Metro and Rover 100 owners, is if you think there's a problem with the car, get it seen to straight away. Believe me, if you leave it, it will be very costly. Any engine noise, get it seen to, it will be a start of a big problem.

General Comments:

The car is small and useful, and I've had a lot of fun with this car.

My advice to you though is, if you're a family person, it's the wrong car for you. This kind of car can be appreciated if kept in good condition. If not serviced regularly, you will start to hate it.

Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Don't Know

1997 Rover - Austin 100 111 Ascot 5 door 1.1 petrol

Summary:

An unloved British CLASSIC!

Faults:

Slight wind noise from the passenger door, went back to the dealer who re-hung the door but to no avail, went back again to the dealer - new seals fitted resulting in marginal improvement.

No other mechanical faults in all 3 years of ownership.

General Comments:

Nearly everybody runs down the trusty "Metro" but with no other reason than the fact that they are usually bought by people who don't like to rush around.

A very reliable, comfortable and affordable small family car with 20 years of manufacturing behind it.

I've got one and I love it, as I'm only 17. My friends think it's a great first car and I intend to keep it for a while!

This car is dangerous and I will not recommend it to anyone.

The reason is that the safety cage will totally collapse in an head on accident and the driver and his/her passengers will not stand a chance.

OK it is cheap and will bring you from A to B and back again, but please think twice, especially if you buy this car for your son/daughter, it is a death trap.
