1991 Rover - Austin 200 216 GTi 1.6 twin cam

Summary:

More aggressive than similarly pitched cars

Faults:

Distirbutor needed replacing at 75,000.

Changed the timing belt at 70,000.

Petrol tank holed at 80,000.

Onto my third set of front discs.

New bushes in the rear suspension linkages.

Play in the CV joints at 85,000.

General Comments:

A very reliable engine that can be taken to the 7250 rpm red line quite comfortably, very revvy with little power below 3000 rpm, likes to drink petrol but what GTi doesn't?

Body finish could be a bit better, excellent with sticky rubber.

1991 Rover - Austin 200 GTi 1.6 twincam 16v

Summary:

Middle aged man's chariot

Faults:

Rear wash wipe didn't work.

Front tyres wear on the edges.

Clutch judder.

General Comments:

Not a bad car, a bit of a Grandads one though

I would be interested in some body styling kits and other performance parts.

Does anyone contact details for a supplier of Rover 200 mods?

1991 Rover - Austin 200 216 GSi 1.6

Summary:

Underestimated bargain

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

For the high mileage and age it is in very good condition and the bodywork is also in good condition.

Great to drive, for anyone looking for an older car with some extras, this is is a good cheap buy.

1991 Rover - Austin 200 216 GSi 1.6

Summary:

For the money you won't find a more capable car

Faults:

Ignition coil.

Both CV joints due to CV boots not being changed in about 5 years.

Radio display started to go wrong at about 95,000.

General Comments:

The car feels very good to drive, although I've had it since I passed my test, it still feels a nice car.

Good ride quality, good long distance car, reliable, not bad looking, can handle well when it needs to, I took mine to the Nurburgring, it was outpaced but it was still fun to drive.

I've driven a Corrado VR6 and a Rover 620 Turbo and my Rover was as good in terms of ride quality and predictibility. It didn't beat either in terms of performance, or the Corrado for handling, but for the money, it is hard to beat.

1991 Rover - Austin 200 216 GTi 1.6 Twin Cam 16V petrol

Summary:

High insurance, high performance, now a real bargain

Faults:

Brake pads / discs need regular changing.

General Comments:

Whehehey, 5000rpm & above. 0-60 about 7 secs, 120 mph top speed.

Not bad for what it is, a 5 seat comfortable go-kart. Insurance is high though.

1991 Rover - Austin 200 216GSi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

The best 1000ukp car you can buy

Faults:

Distributor failure under heavy acceleration. Lasted longer than it should have done!

General Comments:

I struggle to imagine a cheaper, more fun car.

Fast, comfortable, reliable, my only gripes are the Rover dealers, who try their best to rip you off, the handling, which is woolly to say the least, and the fuel consumption, although I guess that's more down to the age of the car than anything else.

I would dearly love another Rover, but I couldn't bring myself to sell this one. I don't believe there's a better car available for the £900 that it's allegedly worth.

1991 Rover - Austin 200 214 Si 1.4 16 valve

Summary:

Second hand bargain

Faults:

Required a replacement gearbox at an indicated 92,000 miles, which seemed low.

Rear wiper packed in after a respectable 100,000.

Rear driver's side light cluster filling with water.

Drivers seat collapsing from 80,000.

Some minor rust on both ends of the bonnet and front wings.

General Comments:

Great engine, loves to be revved up to 6500 redline. However, for a car of this size it doesn't have enough capacity for the torque needed; it requires constant downchanging to make progress, below 3000rpm there is little in the way of pull. Ride and handling respectable.

Nice interior design for a car of its age, plenty of space and decent boot. Body good for a few more years, 130,000 miles and still going for a highly strung engine can't be bad!

1991 Rover - Austin 200 214Si 1.4i petrol

Faults:

Nothing, I got it second hand under twelve months warranty, there were a couple of dodgy tyres but they were all replaced free of charge with tyres of my choice.

General Comments:

Good, relatively cheap, reliable car.

1991 Rover - Austin 200 214Si 1.4 16v injection

Faults:

Lights packed up due to faulty wiring, cambelt changed twice, and 1st and 2nd popping out of gear!

General Comments:

Great car in 5dr form, 1.4i 16v k series engine is loud but onced chipped and tuned it's very responsive and really comes to life at 4,500rpm, also bodywork stays immaculate, looks great with 16" 5 spokes!

Hey!

I have had the same car for 6 years now (bought it new), but I have some problems and hope you can help me out!

Normal stuff: high and rough idle, at stops it stalls then rushes forward, high consumption.

The car is perfectly serviced, in great shape, but, no one ever worked on it or checked any sensors. And they're the thing I would like checked now!

Therefore:

Is there a homepage with at least a bit detailed description of CTS, CAS, TPS and other sensors and how to check them. What to look for first, I mean, I don't even know does this car have a flap air flow meter or a hot film!

Please spare a moment and share a bit of your knowledge with me (rover@mitja.org), I promise to use all of it!

Thanks,

Mitja

1991 Rover - Austin 200 214 Sli 1.4 16v petrol

Faults:

Alternator fault.

Lower gear linkage kept popping out.

Seals to rear lights needed replacement.

Generally OK for an old car.

General Comments:

A bit on the slow side.

Changing the spark plugs yourself is a pain in the a**e, take it to a dealer!

If anything goes wrong on your Rover NEVER take it anywhere else than a rover dealer, I know, I've done it and lost money on unfixed problems.

I have a 1990 214 SLi and my gear linkage came off also.

I have a J 214sli. It has a re-con box but seems quite stiff from 1st to 2nd for about 2minutes when cold. Did you have this symptom before the gear-shift problem? Any ideas would be appreciated! I've had the car for 10 years and apart from the new box have managed all the repairs myself -including the water pump. I have now had my knuckles replaced! A great little car, still going strong after well over 100.000 miles!
