1994 Rover - Austin 400 Si 1.4 16v
Summary:
Shonky, dull bag of spanners. No wonder Rover got into so much trouble
Faults:
Drive shaft bent.
Battery failed due to an alternator fault.
Alternator fried the battery.
Binding brakes.
Rotten exhaust.
Immobiliser keeps locking me out!.
Clutch release bearing started squealing at 50000.
Engine mounts failed.
Paint crap. Rusting badly in places.
Sounds like a diesel at tickover!.
Gearbox vague, synchro on 1st random.
Wiring loom rotting at connectors.
Boot leaks.
General Comments:
Poor build quality.
Rover dealers useless.
Only saving grace is that it flies for its engine capacity!. Can embarrass GTi types when worked hard.
Fuel consumption varies wildly.
For oil consumption, see fuel.
Good heater.
I'd like to build a kit car with the engine, for it truly is the best part of it.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? No

Yup, my car is a 416 SLi, had it for 4 years now and increased the mileage from 42,000 to 97,000. The car is regurlarly thrashed and has NEVER let me down.
Same clutch, engine, gearbox...
Discs and pads changed, car lowered on original shocks.
My 5th Rover and have never had ANY trouble and I am very fussy about my motors...
Regular oil changes every 6000.
