1996 Rover - Austin 400 SLi 1.6

Faults:

Combined clock/stereo display malfunctioned at approx 60000 miles, showing incomplete digits.

Replaced rear trailing arm bushes at 66000 miles.

General Comments:

This is the best car I have ever owned.

It has been supremely reliable, and never let me down.

Being automatic, it has the Honda engine and gearbox, which have never been any problem - legendary Honda reliability.

It is very comfortable and easy to drive, with a good turn of speed when required.

It is also a very well equipped car in SL trim, with ABS, twin air bags, electric windows front and rear, electric tilt & slide sunroof, electric heated mirrors, 6 speaker RDS radio cassette with CD changer functionality, front fog lights, centre rear armrest,3 point centre rear seat belt, mock wood trim and an enormous boot.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 416SLi 1.6 petrol

Summary:

A well-equipped family hatchback

Faults:

The only problem I had was a lose heat shield on the exhaust system, just beyond the cat. This was repaired at my local tyre and exhaust centre for £5.

General Comments:

The car is extremely comfortable and the seats are supportive.

The ride is excellent and the car handles corners very well.

Equipment is generous with electric windows all round, electric mirrors and sunroof, remote central locking, power steering and twin airbags.

The gear-changes are smooth and faultless and the kickdown comes in at just the right moment.

The car feels much more modern than my previous one and should prove reliable, as it shares its engine and transmission with the Honda Civic. I am pleased with my choice of car.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 416 Si 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Severely underrated, just watch out for depreciation

Faults:

Small leak from radiator hose repaired quickly under Rover Approved warranty.

The exhaust section in front of the cat rattles a bit, but this is apparently very common. An irritation rather than a fault.

General Comments:

Underrated car. Ride is on the soft side so handling isn't very sharp but there's plenty of grip.

Engine is very energetic for its size, economical too.

Interior is very nice and comfortable, my only complaint is that the windows sometimes shudder when opened and the switches are fiddly.

Performance is very good for this class of car although the engine gets a bit noisy above 70mph.

The brakes are excellent with discs all round and ABS.

My only problems with this car are its rather high insurance costs and Rover main dealer servicing should be cheaper.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 420 SLi 2.0

Summary:

Suits a family who like comfort, safety and speed (but not too fast)

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

A good car, and with the alloys on it almost looks racey.

Quite fast (wish it was rear-wheel drive).

Well laid out interior.

On safety it scores well, with air-bags, discs all-round and side impact bars.

Some nice little touches e.g spoiler spots.

I've not read many bad things about the 420 SLi. And I have done a lot of reading before purchasing.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 414i 1.4

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

Excellent all round car, very refined with excellent British build quality.

Superb dealer aftercare teamed with a superb extended warranty.

This car is very underestimated and should receive more critical acclaim than it does.

The 1.4i engine is more than up to the job.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 416 Si 1.6

Summary:

Value for money and reliable

Faults:

Car cutting out - faulty ECU (Engineering Control Unit). Dealer tried everything before replacing this expensive unit.

General Comments:

Very nice if uninspiring mid sized car.

Does not suit daily commute motorway driving at 90mph. Best keep to 70-80mph for motorway driving if done on a daily basis.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 420 SLi Hatchback 1994 petrol

Summary:

Just what I wanted, but too thirsty

Faults:

Nothing whatsoever; it is a brilliant car but very thirsty and with petrol prices rising it is not economical, so I would like to switch to the diesel equivalent. Rover make excellent cars! (if you are lucky...)

1996 Rover - Austin 400 1.4i

Faults:

Cam oil seals perished (39,000 miles).

Cylinder head gasket renewal water seals perished and throttle cable links have been adjusted.

All work done under warranty (£376.98), suspicious about other parts of engine that have been replaced (rocker cover, cam belt cover and injection inlet manifold), maybe Rover knew of pending problems.

General Comments:

Overall a good performer, no bad comments as yet, only time will tell.

Faults:

Driver's window trim jammed window...

That's it!

General Comments:

Good, fast motorway eater! Just don't try and park it - turning circle of a train! (Just gets round the M25!) Wouldn't buy another 400 just for this reason...

1996 Rover - Austin 400 420 Gsi 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Squeaks from the rear interior, unable to identify exact location.

General Comments:

Leather seats comfortable.

Looks and drives great.

Not much head room for the rear seat passengers. Anyone over 6' will suffer.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 414 Si 5Dr 1.4 petrol

Faults:

Defective Radio on delivery.

Rattle from exhaust.

Rattles from behind dashboard/console.

Squeaks and groans from steering column.

General Comments:

A good car spoilt by not being put together properly on the production line. I cannot fault the attitude and commitment of the Main Dealer who eventually sorted all the problems out except for a rattle or two.

Apart from this the car has been reliable and comfortable. It also performs surprisingly well for only having a 1.4 ltr engine.

1996 Rover - Austin 400 414i 1.4 petrol

Faults:

Other than a few squeaks, nothing at all really.

General Comments:

Not the most glamorous car, but a good package with a nice cabin, although not for power merchants.
