1998 Rover - Austin 600 620ti 2.0

Summary:

A very underestimated car... ask any BMW, or Audi TT owner!

Faults:

Radiator needed replacing, as a result it overheated, the cylinder head gasket blew, and the head needed re-skimming, valves needed re-grinding, £800 bill in total.

Front brake pads needed replacing.

Rear window got vandalised, new window fitted, it leaked, Autoglass needed 3 attempts to stop it leaking.

General Comments:

The car is very quick, a real wolf in sheeps clothing. The faults I have had with the car, are not really the car's fault, it overheated, and I never noticed,...big mistake!!

Having said that, I like it to drive, and £ for £, its one of the best value for money cars around, there are not that many and as a result, it is a future classic.

1998 Rover - Austin 600 Ti 2.0i turbo

Summary:

High performance - but don't expect quality

Faults:

Drivers electric window 'Auto'.

All discs.

Boot leak.

Rust inside the nearside rear door and petrol filler.

Buzzing from the gear stick.

Cracking noise from off side on acceleration/deceleration.

Coolant leak.

Tyre wear.

General rattles/build quality.

Air conditioning not working.

General Comments:

I have owned the car for only two months having purchased from a Rover dealer.

So much for 'Rover Approved' cars - I am sure they did nothing except change the oil.

In two months of owning they have had the car for three weeks - still unresolved is the gear stick buzzing and cracking noise - has anyone got any ideas because Rover hasn't?

I still love the car and WILL get these sorted out with my one year Rover warranty - or else!

I have read all previous reports and agree that it needs to be handled carefully - the performance is good - but I do notice a significant difference with passengers. Cornering is not brilliant - but I didn't expect it to be - I bought it for motorway driving and that's what it's good at.

Accelerating from lights takes a little time to perfect due to loss of traction as others have mentioned. Be careful in the wet.

I think there is quite a lot of road noise - depends what you are used to I suppose.

I like the interior and the seats are comfortable although the dash creaks a bit. But poor rear leg room - good job I have small children.

As a summary I think it's a good car - but don't expect too much - that's why they are cheap! There are two types of Ti - there's the Friday afternoon one's (like mine - you know what I mean) and the rest which are probably fine - it seems to be just luck.

PS - any comments regarding gear stick and cracking noises would be appreciated.

Mine has gearbox noise. 1999 model. I have no problems but the ratios seem to be close in line with the car's performance. For this reason you may get more noise.

One thing - it's a turbo so change the oil regularly, then you won't get any bother!

I have always admired the 620ti, but we have a 620GSDi, which is a very nice car indeed, (and efficient - 53MPG average) and we have had it for some years now. However, as soon as my mother got in it, (around 2 years ago) and started speeding in it, the gear stick rattles and makes the most irritating noise you could imagine.

I don't know whether or not this could be for the same reason or not, (as yours is going to be far tougher than mine), but apparently it could be due to excessive wear on the cogs in the gear box. (e.g. charging around in it!)

But let me know if you hear any different.

1998 Rover - Austin 600 Ti 2.0 petrol turbo

Summary:

A bargain when low-miles and new-ish. Very nice

Faults:

Rear seat belt stuck, but fixed under warranty.

General Comments:

Not in the same class as my last car - or even in the same school - but it has room for 3 adults in the back. This is why I got it (oh and it was quite cheap).

Car accelerates fine as long as it's in a straight line. Because it's front wheel drive you do get torque steer in the wet. It doesn't drive like a sports car in terms of cornering. Accelerates fine.

It's very good for motorway driving. Quiet, comfortable and quicker than most rep-mobiles on the road.

I get about 25-30 mpg in mixed driving.

Seats and driving position comfortable. No major irritants.

Provided you use full-synthetic oil & change it every 3000 miles, and change the turbo oil feed lines regularly, you won't damage the engine. You also need to make sure you idle it before and after a run for about 1 minute. This will do wonders for our engine.

Mine was 18 months old in perfect condition and didn't really cost all that much.

1998 Rover - Austin 600 Ti 2.0 turbo petrol

Summary:

Nice looking saloon that goes like stink!

Faults:

Brake bulb and clutch (both expected after 40,000+ miles).

But beware, it eats rubber if you thrash it! P6000's cost £80 a piece!!

General Comments:

Very nice car.

Have had many performance saloons - GSi 24v, GSi 2000, T5-R etc. This rates very highly with all of them. Its great advantage is that it looks slow and non-boyracerish! Therefore it does not attract idiots at the lights or get stolen!!

Buy one, you won't regret it.
