1998 SAAB 9-3 S 2.0i

Summary:

Reliable and comfy, a very good motor

Faults:

Needed new brake pipe for MOT.

Needed new windscreen for MOT.

Handbrake cable snapped.

Alternator belt snapped.

Passenger ball joint clonks occasionally.

Needed new tyre's in 2007.

Airbag light comes on occasionally.

General Comments:

A very reliable, comfortable, fast car. Looks good and never really went wrong. We had the car for 3.5 years and the only things that have gone wrong or needed replacing are above. It has always started first time and never missed a beat.

1998 SAAB 9-3 2.0T S 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Cheap turbo fun

Faults:

Gearbox leak.

Front suspension legs rusted mot failure.

General Comments:

The car has been great fun. It is the 185bhp version and goes really well.

Unfortunately you pay for the performance at the pumps. It averages 18mpg round town, but will double that on a run.

It has been 100% reliable and is a nice drive.

The heated front seats are nice on a cold morning.

I will not bore anyone with I beat whatever car; the 0-60 of 7.5 seconds is believable if you can stop the front wheels from spinning. Well done Saab for the 195 tyres on 15 inch wheels and no traction control.

I will be sad to see it go, but I cannot justify the amount of petrol I put in the thing.

1998 SAAB 9-3 SE 2.0i

Summary:

Great value armchair on wheels

Faults:

Saab Information Display pixels do not display correctly (this seems to be a common problem and is easily fixed with a new unit).

Alarm can act up in damp weather.

General Comments:

Comfort is the key with this car. Big supportive seats that work very well for tall drivers (I am 6' 5").

The car is very quiet too and as a second hand buy at about 6 years old represents fantastic value for money.

However... performance on the standard non-turbo version is pretty sluggish.

If you can find/afford a good LPT version or even the 2.3 I would suggest this is a better bet.

Actually it is not me, but my cousin that has a 1998 9-3. His is a diesel hatch with a manual gearbox, and from what I've heard, everything above is true.

1998 SAAB 9-3 SE Convertible 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Best looking convertible on the market

Faults:

Ongoing fault with offside suspension, especially when going over steep road humps, probably not helped by the fact the car has been lowered.

Power hood causing intermittent problems.

General Comments:

Intial scuttle shake a bit unnerving, however driving a convertible is so civilised.

Acceleration is fairly good, with reasonable size cabin although possibly a bit dated.

No more noisy than other cars and purrs along motorways at a steady 80 / 90 mph.

1998 SAAB 9-3 Turbo SE Convertible 185 bhp turbo

Summary:

Worthy of its crown as the best selling 4 seater convertible

Faults:

- Rubber seal around the bottom rear of the hood has given way to wear and tear.

Apart from that, the car is excellent for a 4 year old.

General Comments:

- 185 bhp does itself some justice when overtaking. There is little or no turbo lag.

- The car is quite unsettled in town in first and second gear, though it's nothing that you can't get used to, particularly when you catch a glimpse of your car (and your big smile) reflected from a shop window.

- The cabin is extremely comfortable, and as an SE, it is fully loaded with the right amount of comfort aids. The trip computer and AS2 stereo is makes for comfortable cruises on the motorway.

1998 SAAB 9-3 SE Convertible 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Looks, performance and reliability, but no cornering

Faults:

Nothing at all besides normal service replacement and tear and wear (like tires when you do approx. 25K mile per year).

General Comments:

Fantastic car, my third SAAB Convertible. Major improvement over my previous 900 (more than looks would suggest). Does require sports suspension (stiffer and lower) for handling all of that turbo urge. Very comfortable, but prefers to drive in a straight line.

Image is sky high as proved last week in a test which is not bad for an old car.

Though road holding capabilities might make me move to a 'better' car like the BMW convertible.

If you like performance, comfort and good looks, get it. If you like the country lanes and take corners at Autobahn speeds, look somewhere else or get a tuned version.

1998 SAAB 9-3 SE Turbo 2.0 turbo petrol

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This is my first SAAB, and well it's different.

Am thinking of having it tuned up, but the Abbot racing people are not sanctioned by SAAB, so worries about the warranty.

Never even looked at Mercedes or BMW due to image, SAAB has class.

Very well built and seats are unbelievable.

Feels great at end of a long day.

1998 SAAB 9-3 SE 2.0i 16v petrol

General Comments:

Driver's Seat now higher than previous 900 model, causing taller drivers difficulty in fitting behind the wheel.

New hydraulic clutch a godsend, but the pedal is now much higher and therefore a bit more uncomfortable.

Apart from these two niggling details, I would have no hesitation in recommending this model to anyone.
