2001 SAAB 9-5 SE 2.3 LPT

Summary:

Cheap comfortable barge

Faults:

Engine light came on randomly with no apparent impact on anything. Ignition cartridge replaced with second hand one, and no issues since.

Some pixels on SID come and go.

General Comments:

10 years old, 140K but still very nice to drive. Very comfortable and large useful load space (estate).

Went into this well aware of the potential sludging issues, and found one that had been well looked after using fully synthetic oil and regular changes plus sump drop. Previous owner also put the latest PCV kit on, had a reconditioned turbo and changed the pulley (liable to fail). Should be good for a few years now.

Goes pretty well for a big heavy car, but do pay for it in fuel usage.

Like most cars, they have their issues; just look for one that has been looked after.

2001 SAAB 9-5 Vector 2.0t

Summary:

Fantastic

Faults:

None.

General Comments:

Previously had a Saab 9-5 SE, which was smooth & comfortable, but moving house, so needed a sports estate. Spent ages looking for the right spec Saab 9-5 in later 2001+ spec that also had... electric heated leather sports seats, sun roof, metallic blue.

What a great car. 35 + mpg on a run, but poorer 23mpg in town.

2001 SAAB 9-5 SE 2.3t

Summary:

A pleasure to drive, although it drives like a bus round bends!

General Comments:

I bought my 2001 9-5 2.3t SE 3 months ago with full Saab service history, and it has only had about £1000 spent on it in its lifetime, (apart from tyres, oil, etc). Maybe I'm just lucky. It still drives like a new car now with 129000 miles on the clock, and is an absolute thrill to drive.

I would just like to say that, in my opinion, I believe Saab's reliability has seriously deteriorated since GM got their hands on them, and I welcomed the news a couple of weeks ago that Saab had bought back the motor vehicle division from GM.

Perhaps Saab's will now be what they once were?

Let's hope!

2001 SAAB 9-5 SE Airflow 2.0t

Summary:

Buy one

Faults:

The kerb illumination bulbs on the driver's and passenger's door have failed - but it is summer so I can't be bothered to replace them.

Apart from that, NOTHING HAS GONE WRONG.

General Comments:

10 out of 10 - the most comfortable and reliable car I have owned. It is safe and quick - well built and cheaper than a Merc. After 22 Vauxhalls I will stick to Saabs.

2001 SAAB 9-5 SE 2.0t

Summary:

A fast, comfortable, smooth, motorway cruiser

Faults:

At 79000 miles, three days after purchasing the car, the ignition coil went which caused the catalytic converter to fail. This left me stranded at the roadside & Saab Assist took four hours to recover me.

Headlight wiper motor failed and wasn't covered by warranty.

General Comments:

My car has the 'Hirsch' upgrade pack on which increases power to 250BHP. It is well worth the extra money as it transforms the car entirely.

The seats are the best I've ever sat in and the sound system is very good.

The car is smooth and the automatic gearbox is well suited to the engine.

It is a large car and parking at times can be tricky. The parking sensors are an option well worth having.

The handling round back roads is not fantastic and doesn't inspire confidence to push it hard. However the ride is smooth and is amazingly fast in a straight line or from traffic lights.

The quality of the cabin is impressive and it's well laid out. However, it's not quite up to the standard of certain German rivals.
