1989 SAAB 900 2.0i

Summary:

A seriously underrated car, that would give most new cars a run for their money. BUY ONE TODAY!

Faults:

Nothing except a bald tyre.

General Comments:

I loved my Saab, but the only problem was everyone called me stupid for having a banger, and they all strutted around in Audis and BMWs, but they didn't realise how seriously underrated the Saab range (pre 1993) is. They can go forever, like they have the elixir of life, they are as fast as Linford Christie, and they handle like a tank.

My mates and I were driving one night. We were in separate cars; me in the Saab, Dave in an Audi, and Paul in a BMW. I passed them both, and then let them catch up to me, and suddenly we were racing. The Saab hit 100 mph like a cheetah, then in a matter of seconds 120mph. The other two were amazed; I'd beaten two brand new top end cars, in a 1989 Saab.

The cabin was great, nice big doors, it was only a 2 door, good storage and plenty of room in the back, to say it was a 2 door.

1989 SAAB 900 S 2.0 16v

Summary:

A dependable friend

Faults:

Alarm failed, blowing engine management computer fuses, fuel pump now sounds dodgy. 1 exhaust, 1 alternator, 3 sets front disc's, 1 bye pass valve on throttle body.

General Comments:

After owning a 99 and loving it, I bought this 900 after my second house, it is still with me 13 years later, and is without doubt the best most reliable and cheap car to run I have had. I had it fitted with Saab performance suspension and it handles like a Subaru impreza, got the same tyres on some 17" alloys. Looks superb still and is soon so carry my new born baby around, I wouldn't allow the kid in anything lesser. Fuel consumption is OK at an average of about 30, but goes up if the cruise is used, it also tows our caravan, around the UK and has been seen mixing it with landrovers and other 4x4 pretentious situations. Has started to get looks at the petrol station etc as did my 99 previously, driving a Saab is about being different, it isn't every day you go out and see another car the same on the road, could I drive a silver ford focus? no I see about 100 each day, I am not a stereotype, therefore I drive a Saab, applies generally I think, when I pick it up from the garage, it is expected I want to know whats been done, most Saab people are like that. By the way did you know the later 9-3 side indicators in smoked finish fit the old 900's and they look pretty cool too, mine is white with a simple black pinstripe down the side so adds to the minimalistic appearance of the car, oh the car is also to feature in my wedding later this year, just trying to find a nice white cabrio too.

That sounds like a beautiful car. I have a 85 900 turbo hardtop and I agree with the view that driving a Saab is about being different, I think that's why if you buy one, you have to get another.

A former boss of mine gave me his 1989 900S Saab for my 50th birthday last year when he purchased a new one. All it needed was a body job and a little tender loving care in order to reclaim its former elegance. The plan is for it to drive me to work until we're both ready to retire and, personally, I think we'll both make it!! In the year I've been driving it, I've not seen another in the Montreal area, which suits me just fine. Enjoy!

Anne.

1989 SAAB 900 i 8v 2.0

Summary:

Class. Forget BMWs and Mercedes - this is where it's at

Faults:

Apart from me and my other half attempting to trash the car (twice!), problems have been restricted to the radiator dying (in Winter, of course) and the earth strap breaking a few wires due to wear and tear.

Did need a new clutch when the old one got unacceptably heavy at about 110K miles - it was still usable - but apart from the above, it's been a paragon of virue in it's own way.

General Comments:

Find a non-SAAB garage to spanner it, and make sure it's serviced regularly. Do these things and you'll find it's not only affordable but also intensely practical, despite the slightly sad fuel consumption (30 mpg).

It's the sort of car that grows on you to the point where I'll happily buy another one - and that's given the fact that they're all at least 8-9 years old now.

1989 SAAB 900 8v Coupe Turbo Special 2.0 turbo

Summary:

Build quality of a Merc, presence of a BMW, safety of a Volvo and the performance of a Porsche!

Faults:

Nothing, I keep it well serviced; every 6000 miles.

General Comments:

A superb car. Looking to buy another SAAB soon to do some more spaceship mileage in!

It is in Embassy Blue, and it has leather interior with heated seats - a superb cure for back problems.

It was fitted with a "T" pack from new which gives it better handling.

It's a coupe, so it has all the looks.

The only niggle is that it could do with a rear wash wiper!
