1992 SAAB 9000 CD 2.0 petrol

Summary:

Loved it

Faults:

Lots, and it was usually expensive. Far too much to list/remember. These can be reliable cars however if looked after - but they require frequent attention and skilled servicing to avoid trouble. I bought my car used and I do not think it was very well looked after, hence why I had more than a few problems. Nothing major however - it was all repairable. Some parts were hard to get a hold of even many years ago when I had the car. Saab weren't exactly common and my mechanic hated working on these cars.

General Comments:

Early 1990's Saab 9000. When Saab was Saab. Bloody loved this car. Good looking and comfortable.

My car was black and looked the part. Interior was nice also, wood effect trim on the dash. Very comfortable seats, driving position felt a little odd though as if you are too close to the dash no matter how you adjust the seat. No complaints from rear passengers however.

Great to drive, bloody fast but struggled a bit for 30 - 32 mpg, not great on fuel. A comfortable cruiser or you can have fun on twisty roads, the car's suspension was setup very well.

Shame Saab are no more. I sold mine to a Saab enthusiast ten years ago, I wonder if he still has it...

1992 SAAB 9000 Carlsson CD Turbo 2.3 turbo

Summary:

Powerful and Spacious Sweedish automobile!

Faults:

Steering rack replaced at 177,000 miles.

Headlining sagging in places.

Rubber tubes connecting turbo had perished so they were replaced at 175,000 miles.

General Comments:

This car is very quick and the handling for a car of its size is quite impressive.

The cabin room is extremely spacious in the front and rear. Comparable to the BMW 7 series.

This car would benefit from traction control as wheel spin in 1st and 2nd gear is common in all weather conditions.

Very economical for a car of its size and power, 30mpg can be reached on the motorway.

1992 SAAB 9000 CDE 2.3 turbo

Summary:

Superb build quality with excellent performance and creature comforts

Faults:

It jumps out of second gear, which doesn't bother me too much.

The air conditioning comes on every time I start the car.

The alternator packed up, which cost me £45 to recondition it.

The near side rear brake caliper piston corroded and seized, which cost me about £5 for a new seal kit.

The speedo drive stopped working, so I got a second hand one from the scrap yard.

It has a gearbox oil leak, which I believe is due to the box being over filled.

General Comments:

I bought the car from where I work for £150, which must be the bargain of the century.

I drive the car quite conservatively now, due to high fuel consumption when driven hard.

I have a pretty good idea that my Saab is capable of 147+ miles per hour.

This is by far the best car I have ever owned, because it's so comfortable, fast, quiet and smooth. It's got everything you'd want in a car.

All the specification is standard at the moment, although I'd like to do something with the air intake, because it seems to loose it's poke as the air in the inter-cooler warms up, also I'd like to fit a remote start alarm with total closure, and maybe smoke the windows as it has been broken into once.

1992 SAAB 9000 CSE 2.3 turbo

Summary:

Fast, practical, luxurious, solid, reliable, spacious, inexpensive - buy one!

Faults:

Odd things due to age eg: brake seals, fuel pump, clutch master cylinder and direct ignition.

Dealers are expensive, but there are plenty of backstreet SAAB garages about to radically reduce costs.

General Comments:

It is the 200bhp, full turbo model. Needless to say - it goes like a rocket. Even for a big car, you need strong neck muscles when accelerating. It also has estate car space in the boot.

Not bad on fuel, either. Whether you are in town or on the motorway, this car adapts to the conditions.
