1997 Seat Alhambra TDi 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Very flexible family car with ample room for a grown up family

Faults:

Poor design of 'special' wheel nut socket was not robust enough to free a ceased 'lockable' nut on alloy wheels.

I've also had a recent water leak problem. Thought it was the drains from the windscreen getting blocked, allowing a build-up of water getting behind the dashboard and into the foot wells. This can get under the passenger seat to the well where the control box for the electric windows sits - expensive to replace. Beware! It is a common problem, as the dealer knows to remove the rubber flaps in the drain channels at the top of the wheel arch to prevent leaves blocking them. However, even having done this water still seems to be getting behind the dashboard bulkhead which then drips into the foot wells when going around corners!

General Comments:

Other than the above, this has been a very reliable, cheap to run, car.

1997 Seat Alhambra TDi 1.9 turbo diesel

Summary:

Great car for the family and good fuel consumption

Faults:

Sun visor mirror cover replaced 4 times. This is due to a poor plastic which degrades over time in the summer heat. Last replacement visor was a new design and has been perfect.

Engine mounting bolt sheared at 40000 miles. I replaced the bolt myself for £1.00 and have a spare bolt in the boot.

A lorry damaged the read tailgate and the repairer had to wait 2 months for the parts.

My rear door speakers cover are all broken.

My brake lights went when the switch failed. Replacement fix it at 45000 miles.

Apart from the above my air con has been fine up to now and car drives very well.

General Comments:

The car has been very reliable and great pulling power with 5 people and luggage on the way to France. If the air con fails we would suffer.

The kids love it because of the height and space.

I have enjoyed it and the diesel consumption is very good especially in France where diesel is half price.

1997 Seat Alhambra 2.0

Summary:

It does the job very well

Faults:

The illuminated mirrors on the sun visor have had to be replaced at least twice, but all done under warranty.

The main problem has been the air conditioning. There would be a noise from the AC, then it wouldn't pump out any cold air. The dealer had it re-charged, which would work for about a year. It was finally cured by a new compressor being fitted, by luck we had taken out the fourth year warranty or it would have been over £600.

Also, the speaker grills get broken easily.

General Comments:

Apart from the above the car has been extremely reliable mechanically.

We have four children and it's great for them. It's a joy to drive, and we are very pleased with it.

Also it pulls our caravan extremely well although the MPG suffers badly, going into about 18MPG when towing.

1997 Seat Alhambra TDi 1.8 turbo diesel

Faults:

Very little, just wear and tear. Never been back to dealer for warranty repairs after 26,000 miles.

General Comments:

Spacious, comfortable on long runs, takes lots of children and luggage. Heated windscreen would make it perfect.
