1996 Seat Ibiza CLS 1.4

Summary:

Would recommend the car to anyone

Faults:

It broke down once when we had very bad rain and I had to go through a big(ish) puddle. I was stuck on a country lane and had to wait 20 minutes for it to start again.

Not much space in back - but it is only a 3 door.

General Comments:

Car is VERY responsive when you touch the gas.

Very economical, very cheap to tax, run and insure.

Hasn't needed any work done for M.O.T.s while I've had it, the only thing it has need from me is a set of new spark plugs, so can't complain.

This was my first car and only about the third of the price of insuring most 1 litre engine cars and it's more 'roomy'.

1996 Seat Ibiza CLS 1.9 diesel

Summary:

A great, reliable wee car. If only it were 2ft longer!

Faults:

Nothing serious.

Hit a branch on a country lane & snapped the CAT.

Timing belt started to squeal at 58,000.

Rear wheel bearings replaced at 59,000.

A few rust patches on rear bumper (it is an 11 year old car though!).

General Comments:

I highly recommend this car! I'd still have it now, but my family is growing all the time, & we needed something a little bigger!

Great fun on a windy, country road. Not the fastest acceleration, being a 1.9d, but the mpg is outstanding.

Reliable VW engine good for 300,000+ miles!

An easy car to maintain & look after.

Good driving position, all buttons & gauges are within easy reach. Nice size boot for a hatchback, but the legroom in the rear is a little cramped.

Great for a couple or a small family (2 adults + 1 child.)

1996 Seat Ibiza Salsa 1.1 3dr 1.0

Summary:

Great value runaround, great 1st car

Faults:

Nothing really, problem with the exhaust emissions when MOT'd, apart from that very reliable.

General Comments:

I think it's a great car. A bit slow, but quiet and comfortable especially on motorways, etc. Great value considering the equivalent polo is at least 1000euro dearer.

No power steering, but not a problem for me, once you get moving in it it's fine.

1996 Seat Ibiza Salsa 1.4i

Summary:

Good car, nice drive, good value for money

Faults:

Car had been very reliable although after 105000 miles brakes and cam belt need replacing.

General Comments:

Car was very reasonably priced and has many features like airbags, power steering, remote central locking which are important for safety and performance and usually only appear on newer or more expensive cars.

It is not the most pretty car, but drives nicely, is quite cheap to run and can hold its own on the motorway.

It is quite spacious and can do 110 mph, sits at 95 comfortably. Car is not so good around corners and tends to squeal a bit.

The dashboard is ugly and high up so obstructing the view of the curb, but overall a good, well performing car. Good value for money. I will be upgrading to the newer version soon.

1996 Seat Ibiza clx 1.4 petrol

Summary:

Safe, but slightly obnoxious bargain

Faults:

Tiny rusty tinges have just appeared around the doors.

The indicator has blown which may indicate a big problem with the electrics.

Other than that, nothing.

General Comments:

This car feels totally reliable and Ibizas of this age are usually very cheap compared to their Volkswagen stablemates.

The car is really robust for a nipper - it's noisy and feels safe, but looks sort of innocuous.

The brakes and clutch are not hugely response - you really have to floor them so they seem like an object lesson in cause and effect. This and the lack of power steering can make turnarounds in the road a bit of a chore.

There is something strangely obnoxious about the way the car lunges - it's got a lot of attitude.

1996 Seat Ibiza Salsa 1.4

Summary:

Excellent and talented run about

Faults:

Occasional problems starting.

It's needed two sets of HT leads.

General Comments:

Easy car to live with. It performs quite well up to 70, just one up. The gearing is quite low and the engine is quite punchy low down, so it takes off quite well. On the motorway with more than one person and luggage it struggles a bit. I think at 60 BHP, with a tall body it is underpowered for motorway work, though will cruise OK.

Seats are OK for two hours and then become really uncomfortable. I'm just under 6 foot, with long legs. I have the seat as far back as I can, and am just about comfortable for shorter journeys, but no adult can sit behind me.

Boot is an awkward shape because of the suspension turret intrusion. The load lip or sill is quite high. We had to get a bigger car when our daughter was born, as we could not cope with buggies etc.

The biggest gripe I have is with the local SEAT dealer. The car always came back worse than when it went in. I now use an independent VW dealer.

The car is practically a VW polo; I think just the front sub-frame and exhausts are different.

MPG is just under 40MPG. I mainly use it commuting to work which is fast A roads.

Standard radio was pants - I fitted the one from my old car.
