2008 Skoda Roomster 2 1.4 turbo diesel

Summary:

An amazing car that is refreshingly different

Faults:

Nothing, but the brakes seem somewhat "wooden." I think the front pads might have been glazed when I bought the car, and need to be looked at.

I think dipped beam could be much better. I am experimenting with various bulbs at the moment.

General Comments:

I love it.

Even with the couple of niggles already mentioned, I am really pleased with it.

Economy is about 45-50 MPG around town in heavy-ish traffic. On the motorway I have averaged 65 MPG at 70mph.

I am amazed how much power it has for a 1.4 diesel, it is very impressive.

There is some cabin noise from the engine and road, but it's not really intrusive.

Everyone who sees it likes it, especially the amount of room inside.

That was my original post. I've owned the car just over one year now and it still drives fine. It was serviced last week with no problems reported. It's now done 29900 miles.

I found some high performance bulbs for the headlights, which improved night time driving greatly. These are straight replacements, not a HID kit.

The heater I think is still poor for a modern car. Skoda made a big thing on their promo video on YouTube about the work they had put into the heating system, but I've had diesels with much better heaters.

It seems to have developed a very slight low frequency vibration that I can actually feel through the seat, more so at low revs. I thought maybe it was an engine mount, but the garage said they were fine. Still getting 45-50 MPG round town and 60 on the motorway.

So after a year, yes I still like it.

2007 Skoda Roomster 2 diesel

Summary:

Excellent

Faults:

MP3 connector came off very early on, but quickly fixed by dealer and no subsequent problems.

General Comments:

Good performance given its size and weight.

My wife found it very comfortable.

Easy to fit luggage and large items due to the ease with which seats can be removed.

Very sturdy - without this car I might not be here, following a motorway accident.

2008 Skoda Roomster 3 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Unsatisfactory due to poor build quality

Faults:

(1) Very bad knocking from front of car noticed when cold weather started: worse at low ambient temperature - steering rack replaced but problem persists; padding added to passenger airbag area - problem still persists - anti-roll bar bushes being replaced - I hope this works.

(2) Second steering rack failed due to bad internal oil seal - towed to dealer by Skoda Assist.

(3) Minor rattles/buzzing from interior trim (dashboard and front door panels) - these were also evident in the 4 Skoda Fabia courtesy cars I have had.

(4) Rear head rests started rattling (!) - this was due to a small plastic piece becoming detached inside the headrest.

(5) Clutch pipe became detached due to faulty clip.

(6) Exhaust/catalyst heat shield became detached, causing bad vibration on bodywork.

All of the above have occurred after only 2000 miles!

Problem (1) is the major issue and is still to be rectified - I have lost faith in the supplying dealer and have appointed another Skoda dealer to pursue the existing issues. I am considering formally rejecting the vehicle, should the first problem not be rectified.

I have asked for the Skoda Area Technical Manager to get involved.

General Comments:

Very poor build quality on this particular vehicle. Otherwise, it's a very good ergonomic design and quite economical.

Our new car enjoyment has been let down by the poor build quality. I cannot recommend the Skoda Roomster, and will never purchase another Skoda.

2007 Skoda Roomster 3 TDI 1.4 TDI turbo diesel

Summary:

Well built and practical car

Faults:

To date the Roomster has performed faultlessly. However when I initially picked it up from the dealer, the MP3 connection was broken. This was pointed out to the dealer who sorted the matter out quickly. Apart from this initial glitch, no further issues.

General Comments:

This is a very practical car, once you get over the unusual looks. It's not a hot-rod, but the 1.4 TDI performs adequately, returning a 50 + mpg.

It is very comfortable and the seating position gives good all round vision. It is a very solidly built car, and has a quality feel about it.

2006 Skoda Roomster 3 1.5 16v

Summary:

A good small MPV for the price of a good super mini

Faults:

Tracking needed adjusting after it came off the transporter.

General Comments:

Very roomy and light inside, everyone gets a good view out, even back seat passengers as the rear seats are set higher than the front.

Having owned a Mazda Demio prior to this, I expected this car to have lots of body roll due to the car being quite tall (taller than the Demio).

The ride is smooth and steering is crisp, and the cruise control comes in handy for long drives.

The layout of the instruments is good; everything is easy to find and use, lots of little storage spaces. However some are a bit small (the chilled glove-box is a good idea).
