2000 Subaru Forester GLS 2.0

Summary:

Used Foresters are real alternatives to 4x4's

Faults:

None to date, we have only had to buy new wiper blades.

General Comments:

Looking for an ideal towing car for our caravan, but not wanting a true 4x4 we have found the answer. The overall condition of the car at four years old is excellent and fuel economy more than reasonable for a petrol model.

2000 Subaru Forester Turbo S 2.0 turbo

Summary:

A fantastic car

Faults:

Nothing except that the headlamp washers are vulnerable to vandalism, minor tips etc.

General Comments:

It performs and handles better than anything else I've driven recently.

When the "hum in the bum" (wheel bearings and/or diff) develops at around 100,000km, you might try switching to front wheel drive. Add a fuse (spare supplied) at the fuse box under the bonnet, (see manual). On the top right as you lean over the wing. Indicator in instrument panel shows "FWD" (front wheel drive). Doesn't handle as nicely as in 4x4, less steering self-centring and traction, but potentially will improve fuel economy. FWD is intended as a "get you home" measure, but anecdotal evidence is that people have run for years in FWD. In Japan, we essentially scrap a Subaru at 100,000km when expensive repairs/servicing are due, often sending it to a third-world country, like UK. Just kidding…(about the third-world part).
