2005 Suzuki Ignis 4 grip 1.5

Summary:

Excellent value 4x4 but not a good choice for high mileages

Faults:

Noisy wiper blades.

General Comments:

Excellent road holding and grip - can corner quickly, once you get used to the amount of roll.

Good for narrow country lanes and poor surfaces, but no advantage for long distances on A roads and motorways.

Fuel consumption disappointing even on long journeys, but is the price you pay for 4x4.

Even with a light right foot the best is high 30's. Would have been better with a diesel engine.

Very effective brakes - stops car very quickly even without using ABS.

Tends to need a lot of gear changing on hills and much use of vvt boost.

Good high driving positon and comfortable seats.

Poor headlights, especially dipped beam - too low even when adjusted.

Please read report titled "surprisingly horrendous, unfortunately" as this is another full description of this car. I also agree with your comments, and forgot to mention the boot light/shelf and poor headlights in my report. How on earth did you manage high 30s mpg?! Were you being towed?

It would have been more bearable with the DDIS engine and a better gearbox. I would have managed another month with it...!

Re: previous comment, better than Panda 4x4 or Terios; I now withdraw this having spent more time with the Ignis 4Grip. Anything else would be better!

2005 Suzuki Ignis Sport 1.5vvt

Summary:

Great, I'd have one in each colour if I could afford to!

Faults:

Absolutely nothing.

General Comments:

Fantastic little car. Great performance and equipment for the price. I'm on my second Sport having rolled the first one, so I'd say they're pretty safe too! Only niggle is that cos its so rare, most bits have to be bought from the dealer, and that's not cheap.

Totally agree.. we now have a Sport and a standard car.

Owned the Sport for 5 years; just standard service requirements.. find a local specialist.

At 56 I am still a boy racer, and can burn quite a few off the road with acceleration :-)

2005 Suzuki Ignis GL 1.5 petrol

Summary:

Much better than the old one

Faults:

Not much - the heating/ventilation controls were faulty on delivery, and I suspect this was the work of the mechanic who (dealer) fitted the aircon. A new panel sorted this out pretty quickly. The external driver's door handle became stiff to pull. I tried a few drops of oil into the inner door mechanism, which has helped. Time will tell if it is a cure. If not, hopefully it'll be a warranty job.

General Comments:

I had the old version (2000 'X') and can definitely say that this car is a big improvement. I liked the old car, but had to admit that the ride was rock-hard. It's still on the firm side, but - as long as you keep the tyre pressures a pound under the recommended - it's now quite acceptable, and vastly better than the old one. You can catch the suspension out over sharp bumps / ridges if you really try, but what do you expect? - this is a short wheelbase car...

The tyres look skinny, but it goes round corners very well. Steering is light and positive. I had the optional alloys, which are easy to clean.

The dash looks a lot nicer than the old one, and the integrated radio/CD setup is really practical. I don't think the sound is as good as claimed, but again it's OK. The red dash lighting is a bit flash (but can be dimmed) but the daftest part is that the main lighting switch assembly is lit in white - couldn't they have just put a red bulb in it to match the rest?! However, you really don't notice it when driving, and nothing's perfect!

The remainder of the dash area is practical and easy to use, the fuel economy and outside temperature readouts being a bonus. Plastics quality is much the same as everybody else's in this price range. Aircon's not as powerful as Getz's, but does the job - only slower!

Seating is comfortable, there is plenty of space, and you sit nice and high. The wheel doesn't adjust, but I've no complaints about that. There's loads of headroom and no problems with the 'A' pillar obstructing the view. My old one was the top model also, so I notice that, while they've kept the seat height adjustment, the lumbar support has disappeared. As has the tray under the old 'false' boot floor - now it's just a carpeted space. But you now get a parcel shelf instead of a net, so it's swings and roundabouts. (I preferred the net, though - you could fold it up and get rid of it!) There is a lot more room in the boot now, though (this car's 6" longer than the old one), and this is a big advantage. And at 5'10", I don't bang my head on the open hatch - unlike many competitors I looked at.

With the 1.5 Auto, there is nearly 100bhp in a light car. Compared with my old Getz auto ('53' plate), this is quieter, vastly more powerful, yet more economical (39mpg on my commute) and the same insurance group. You can't lose!

The auto-box itself is not quite as smooth as the Getz, but is as good as most. Ratios are fine with about 25mph per 1000rpm in top.

The pseudo 4x4 look will not please some, but above all it's practical and roomy. Frankly, for the money, I don't know why there aren't more around!

Well, after a year or so, nothing has gone wrong and the oil I sprinkled on the driver's door handle mechanism has proved to be a cure!

1st service was about £125, which seems a bit steep for a budget car, but the dealer (Brownings, Cambridge) is pleasant.

So good news so far...

I would echo the comments above. I have had an Ignis Sport for over a year and have been very impressed with it. With this in mind, I suggested that my mother looked at a Swift when she was looking to replace her Hyundai Accent auto. However, she was so impressed test driving the new Ignis auto that the dealer had in stock that she bought it. The ride quality and road noise is much better than the reviews would lead you to believe – it is much better than my wife's 2004 Fiesta 1.25 Finesse.

I don't know what people expect from such a small car at this price (approx. £8600 new)? The performance for a small auto seems good and all round it is a nice car to drive. I prefer hot hatches, hence my current Ignis Sport and previous Octavia vRS so I obviously prefer a firm ride, but I think the Ignis GL auto is a good drive and certainly, to my mind, better than the favoured Ford Fiesta.

Well, it's now 3 years old and I'm swapping it for a Sirion auto. Got £5000 for it in p/ex - brilliant!

No problems with the Ignis over 33,000 miles. Would continue to recommend it to anyone, provided you're OK with the harsh ride.

I had an Ignis, and now own a Sirion, both manual, and honestly rate the Sirion as a far superior car.

I hope you enjoy it!
