1990 Suzuki SJ410 SANTANA 1.0 petrol

Summary:

Cost efficient fun 4x4

Faults:

Had some trouble with the clutch and gear box. The new clutch that was fitted slipped and one of the spindles joining the gear box to the clutch cracked. Both not major jobs at all!

Current problem is that the drive shaft has cracked which I'm told isn't unexpected in 4x4, this too, doesn't cost much and is a straight forward job!

General Comments:

It may not be the fastest car on the road, but it makes up for it with the smile it puts on my face! It is a seriously fun car to drive, due to the very unique driving position. It's fairly comfortable for a jeep and space is not a problem.

It has proved very cheap to run and has always been fairly reliable.

Listening to the stereo whilst driving can be a problem due to the loud engine, but considering it has such a small engine, it growls!

Doesn't handle amazingly on the road, but will stand up to a lot off-road.

1987 Suzuki SJ410 Q sport 1.0 petrol

Summary:

An excellent, fun, off road vehicle

Faults:

Body rusty when purchased.

Soft top leaks - only to be expected!

General Comments:

This is an amazing off-roader.

Humourous on road, not the most comfortable car in the world, but that's not what this vehicle's about. Performance on road is poor, and is helped greatly by an after-market free-flow exhaust.

This is a lifestyle, not a car. Don't expect it to start every morning, but if it does you know you'll be travelling in style! Insurance prices are high for a first time motorist such as myself.

Costs are outweighed by the sheer fun of ownership. Soft top is a must in my opinion.

So, just what is great about owning this pile of junk? It's rusty, it leaks, it's not very comfortable, it doesn't always start and it's expensive to insure.

There is certainly nothing stylish about that.

But the cars got soul.

They are really good.

1986 Suzuki SJ410

Summary:

A great first car, and an excellent offroader

Faults:

Only a few small things went wrong with this car. The worst was a shoddy exhaust that the previous owner (it had three before me) hadn't repaired properly. The other thing that went wrong was that the door handle on the passenger side eventually stopped opening the door. But I guess that's what you expect from a car this age.

General Comments:

An excellent first car, good because it doesn't go too fast for the new driver, and reliable to boot. It also had excellent off road ability, beating a lot of Landrovers and other muscley 4x4s due to its light weight and short wheelbase.

How much are they to insure as a first car (17 year old)

1985 Suzuki SJ410 Soft-top 1.6 Ford X-flow !

Summary:

A superb bouncy off-road toy

Faults:

Bought as a project, because of the crazy engine transplant; all it took for the MOT was un-seizing a front brake caliper and adjusting the handbrake by a notch or two.

So far, my only problems are the electrics, which have been bodged by previous owners - I retrieved a loom from a Jeep in a breakers yard for £30, which will be installed when I have a dry day.

I would like to replace the rag-top as it is patched and poor, but have yet to find a source of cheap replacements.

General Comments:

My tiny sister had one as her first car, so I knew it to be fun, light, slow, noisy and generally competent off-road.

The big engine provides much more power with minimal modification to the car and could probably take the vehicle faster than the transmission is designed to endure. Steep hills and bad ground are no obstacle!

It is too light to tow Land Rovers etc. out of the mud, but skips across boggy ground that heavier vehicles would flounder in.
