1993 Toyota Carina Executive 2.0

Summary:

What a great car!

Faults:

Radiator needed replacing at 102000 miles.

Following a timing belt change the water pump failed.

Rear anti roll links replaced.

Engine mount (front) replaced.

General Comments:

The purchase of the car was a quick decision as my previous car had been written off. I did not put a lot of thought into it.

I have since grown to love this car. I drove 200m a day 5 days a week for a year to work and back. This was mostly motorway and I did not drive slowly... trust me!!! I have since got a job closer to work and the mileage is less.

This car is awesome. It performs well in all areas. OK... you're not going to attract women with it... but if she's a keeper she won't mind!

Took it to Italy and back last year. Not a hi-cup...

I would recommend this car, although I guess they are becoming scarce due to the age.

I see that the first generation Avensis is closely related. This may be a very good buy.

I wrote the review to which I am commenting on. Update - the car has now driven 152000 miles and has been 100% reliable. Very good car.

I am the original reviewer... car now at 157000 miles. Now bought a Volvo V70 classic (year 2000) for the safety features and air-con. I still have my Carina - although it is the off road at present. Still maintain that this car is an awesome motor - reliable, quick and lots of features for a car of this time. It's hard not to love them. Regular oil changes and fix any issues as they arise is my motto concerning cars...

1993 Toyota Carina GLI 1.8

Faults:

Absolutely nothing - this car is bullet proof.

General Comments:

There is no sign of rust, even after 14 years parked outside.

I have owned this car for 3 years and it has never let me down.

I replace the oil once per year, and refill the screen wash every 3 months.

Economical; to run. Very reliable. Doesn't rust.

Plenty of power.

If Toyota continued this model, I would buy another.

I look forward to this car delivering my Indian Takeaway in another three years time, less the wheel trims of course!

These cars go on and on, fantastic!

1993 Toyota Carina LXi 1.6

Summary:

This car is Outstanding!

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong in the 5 months I've owned it, it starts first time every time, its perfect! Oh I suppose I best mention that I do at least 1800 miles a month.

General Comments:

I've been using this Carina as a Taxi (part time), as did the previous owner. On Fridays and Saturdays I us it for 10 hours a day and it drives perfectly.

I will be buying another Toyota when this one will not pass a Council MOT, but its looking fine with no rust and no dents! :o)

1993 Toyota Carina GLi 1.6 16v petrol

Summary:

Brilliant comfortable understated workhorse

Faults:

Original battery went after 11 years.

Original radiator went after 12 years.

Original rear shocks went after 140,000 miles.

General Comments:

Build quality outstanding. My car still had its original 1993 exhaust and Cat when I came to sell it, and both had passed the previous MOT with flying colours.

With just the driver, the 1.6 is reasonably nippy (0-60 in little over 8 seconds), but if you stick 5 blokes in it, it's woefully underpowered!

0-60 in 8 seconds!? Er... no.

1993 Toyota Carina Executive 2.0

Summary:

A great all rounder, but dull. This helps to make them seriously cheap second hand buys

Faults:

New rear suspension needed at about 110000 miles and a new water pump needed at about 90000 miles.

General Comments:

This car has been fantastic. So good, in fact, that I currently own 3! A 1.6, a 1.8 and the 2.0 Executive. The 2 liter engine is very smooth and powerful. It is also very economical. On a run I can get 45 mpg and round town it averages about 30mpg. That's with a light foot. I have never had it serviced properly. I just have the oil and filters changed every 15000 miles. Strangely, the 1.6 is the least economical of the lot.

I presume these are the Carina E models? Strange the 1.6 is the least economicaql as this, and the 1.8 use lean-burn technology whereas the 2.0 doesn't! Good cars though I agree.

Although I wrote this review, I agree that it is odd that I get more from the 2.0 than the 1.6 but having owned both for a few years and covered over 70000 miles in total, it is strange, but true. Anyone else out there have this experience?
