1988 Toyota Corolla AE82 GT Twincam 1.6 16v

Summary:

But make sure you bring yourself a helmet!!! LOL

General Comments:

This car is the 2nd AE82 I have owned, and I love them.

These cars pull very nicely, and are known to be "wolves in sheep's clothing"... However they're very rare.

I used to have a D reg, and now own a E reg, and don't think I'll ever sell this one, because it's one of the last ones in the country. And also, I have spent £2500 pounds on it LOL.

Well those who haven't owned these cars, need to track one down and ask the owner to take you in it!!!

1988 Toyota Corolla GL 1.6

Summary:

A good, reliable car

Faults:

Rust, rust and more rust. The rear wheelarches were a real problem.

The starter motor squealed from the day I bought it. It never packed up though!

General Comments:

A great car and not expensive to run. Japanese care are supposed to be expensive for parts, but parts were always cheap for the Corolla.

1988 Toyota Corolla Executive 1.6

Summary:

One of the better small/medium hatchbacks of the late eighties/early nineties

Faults:

Rear shock absorbers started to leak at around 133000 miles. Even using pattern parts this cost a LOT of money to fix. (£136 and I repaired it myself).

Rust is starting to become a problem, with bubbling on both rear arches and around the sunroof.

General Comments:

Very reliable, and still drives perfectly well at this high mileage. Very easy to do minor repairs and servicing yourself (cambelt is very easy compared to other manufacturers).

Pay a bit more and buy a very nice one, as Toyota parts prices are ludicrously expensive!

1988 Toyota Corolla GTi 1.6 16v petrol

Faults:

The only problem I had during my 18 months of ownership was water in the headlamp relay resulting in the lights not switching off. This was very easily sorted at little cost. I scored the running costs as cheap because although Toyota parts are expensive, it will rarely let you down.

General Comments:

Blistering performance when revved hard. A real understated hot hatch. If you're thinking of buying a Golf/205/XR then go ahead. But be warned! One of these will blow you off the road.

I bought a Corolla GTI several months ago. It's a 1990 G-reg. I paid £850.00 for it. I've hardly lifted a spanner to it.

I was amazed at the value for money as well as the quality etc. I've had Astra SRi's, Cavalier 2.0i, Nova SRi, But none of them are a mark on my wee Corolla.

I don't know why folk are so scared of buying these cars, they are easier to own and run than what most folk think. Parts from dealers can be pricey, but shop around, and because of the super reliability this rarely happens.

Buy one for street credibility, the power and reliability!
