1992 Toyota Corolla i 1.3i

Summary:

I love this car, and will be sad to see it go

Faults:

Apart from the usual wear & tear (brake discs, pads & breaks), the only thing to have been replaced is the hydraulic things that hold the boot door up.

The car is starting to rust now. It is nearly 20 years old.

General Comments:

Although the car is only 1.3 engine, the injection makes it a fine ride. OK, so we don't overtake many cars on the motorway, but we often have 4 of us and a boot full (it is an estate).

It is cheap to run and insure.

It is SO reliable.

I am finding it hard to find another 2nd hand car that matches the good ride and comfort of this one.

1992 Toyota Corolla glxi

Summary:

Very well built car

Faults:

Had to get a new battery once.

General Comments:

This car was one of the best cars I have owned.

I bought it as runaround, when I was living in the channel islands, I have never so much as put a drop of oil in it. it just went on and on.

I brought it to france many times to load up with wine and it never let me down. been the top model it had all the extras as well and it was a very easy on petrol returning over 35mpg.

I sold it to a Polish friend who has since drove it to Poland and back with no problems.

1992 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Excellent build quality and reliability

Faults:

Ignition barrel is quite stiff, partially cured by spraying WD40 into it.

Needed new O2 sensor after filling up with a duff batch of petrol - not the car's fault.

Paint faded quite badly.

Nothing apart from that.

General Comments:

I paid £150 for this car, it had six weeks MOT to run. It passed it's MOT first time with no work required - very impressed with this.

Lovely light power steering, foolproof gearbox and clutch.

Comfortable on longer journeys.

Rolls a bit on corners and wanders slightly in crosswinds.

Brakes are a bit heavy.

Very spacious.

Not too much power at low revs, wakes up after 3500 rpm.

1992 Toyota Corolla LXi Estate 1.3

Summary:

Very good small estate

Faults:

Replaced both rear shock absorbers (dampers) at 110K miles. Replaced cam-belt at 110K miles - hadn't been changed at 60K, but still looked almost new.

Outer drive-shaft boot cracked and had to be replaced 110K miles.

Central locking doesn't work on the tailgate lock.

General Comments:

Security is laughable - locks are poor. Invest in an alarm and immobiliser.

Seats are very good and take the wear very well.

Engine ultra-reliable and reasonably willing, but sounds strained above 4K rpm. It red lines at over 6K rpm, but no-one would dare take it that high!

Fuel consumption is disappointing - around 30-35 mpg on shorter runs (3 to 5 miles) and only 40 mpg on longer ones (100 miles).

Cruises on motorway at 80 mph no problem.

No traction control, ABS, airbags, electric windows, aircon. Who cares - starts first time every time.

1992 Toyota Corolla XL 1.3

Summary:

Fun, reliable, cheap!

Faults:

Starter motor had to be replaced. Ball bearing had to be replaced in front wheel.

General Comments:

This car is the most comfortable I've ever owned. With Irish roads a car like this is needed. It loves to be thrown around corners.

1992 Toyota Corolla GTi 1.6

Summary:

This car is cheap. reliable and a lot of fun

Faults:

The car failed it's MOT on the rear wheel bush. Toyota advised me this would cost £220 plus fitting because they had to purchase the whole kit (arm and bush). I took the car to a local garage who charged me £60 and replaced the bush with a second hand one.

I have had no major problems with the car.

General Comments:

For a car that's 12 years old it's got most the mod con's (Eletric windows, sunroof, and wind mirrors), all of which are in prefect working order.

The interior isn't that bad on the eye and is very comfortable. The seats hold you in place for those country lanes and are also comfortable for those long journeys.

The best part about the car is its performance. 1st gear will get you to 40mph and you can hit 60 in 8 seconds (although it feels faster). The car loves it's rev's and it's easy to drop a gear and overtake safely. The Toyota GTI compared to Golf GTI / Astra GTI etc is quicker. The top end is OK, at 80 mph you can drop it into 4th and finish in 5th doing 130mph (not recomemded).

The car isn't the best looking from the front, but it looks nice from the side. The rear of the car looks like a standard corolla which I quite like. I've surprised many people by pulling away at the lights.

The handling is very good and just loves being driven round country lanes.

I am thinking of buying a Corolla GTI-16 next year.

I don't know if it will have better performance than my Civic 1.6i-16 DOHC.

It is very hard to beat the 4th gen Honda Civic 1.6i-16 DOHC.

One of the greatest hatchback's of all time.

1992 Toyota Corolla GTi 16V 1.6 petrol

Faults:

I bought the car 8 months ago, it has now covered 92,000 miles, of which I have added 9,000, uses no oil or anything else between services.

General Comments:

Must be driven hard to get the best performance, as it really kicks in at 3500rpm, limiter is at 8250rpm, apart from CRX and VTS, all 1.6's watch out. Yes that includes XR2i's, 205's, and all GTE's (I feel sorry for people I have raced and who have lost - NOT!)

This car is a very underrated hot hatch!

I have recently restored my Corolla GTI 16 V. The car was the first one in the country of the Mk2 version, bought in 1988 by my mum from a Toyota dealership in Nelson, Lancashire, UK. The car has now been fully restored and is in fantastic condition, 0-60 sub in 7 seconds due to a few slight modifications. It blows most hot hatches off the road and at 14 years old it's the best little car I've had so far. I was going to buy the new Mini, but for now the Corolla stays!

1992 Toyota Corolla Gli 1.3 16v Twin Cam injection pet

Faults:

It was bought second hand, and developed an engine fault causing oil to be lost (thrashed by previous owner). Engine was replaced under warranty. A calliper seal failed recently and was also replace under warranty.

General Comments:

Fantastic car. Comfortable, good features. Excellent mpg when cruising sensibly, and quite a nippy 16v DOHC injection engine despite being small. Liftback version has a MASSIVE boot. JD Power survey winner 4 years in a row.
