1993 Toyota Corolla Executive 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Reliable and dependable, wish it was still made!

Faults:

Lots of preventative maintenance and wear and tear parts replaced. To get this car's reliability they have to be looked after as much any car otherwise you will have problems.

General Comments:

A stunningly durable little car, this Corolla did me well for many years.

Executive model had plenty of equipment for its time, electric windows, mirrors, and so on. Very comfortable interior.

The car is smooth to drive with the auto box. 1.6 is not very fast and only does around 36 mpg at best, but that is OK for this engine's age.

Dull looking but not ugly. The car is an odd grey/green color.

Passed it on to my Grandparents when it was 20 years old and they still have it at 30 years old still going strong! It is kept garaged, cleaned and used sparingly though. I miss simple reliable cars like this.

1993 Toyota Corolla 2.0 diesel

Faults:

Em, let me think, now, what has gone wrong, wait now, em, aha, the tyres needed replacing!

And, I think some bulbs blew, and bushings were replaced at 120,000.

The ashtray needed to be emptied...

General Comments:

I had one 13 years ago, and I was a chap and drove like a loon, full speed from cold, day after day after day. Slamming on the brakes, handbrake turns, burn outs, J turns, you name it, it tried it. It was a company car.

The car was quite simply built like a tank.

All those years on and I'm looking for a cheap runaround as a second car. Guess what I'm gonna buy... I'll probably hold off on the old J turns with junior strapped in until he's old enough to request them or do them himself!!!

1993 Toyota Corolla GLi 1.3

Summary:

Amazingly reliable, Toyota won my heart

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

This car is by far the best car I have ever owned. No headaches, no costs, nothing. My 2.0 V6 is a headache to keep running compared to the corolla. The corolla needed nothing doing, all I did was serviced it myself every few months and just drove, drove and drove. It started in any weather the second I ticked the key. Oil consumption was nothing, fuel economy is the best I have ever seen and its boot was huge! No wonder it is planet earth's best selling car.

1993 Toyota Corolla Executive 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Smart, well equipped and cheap to insure - get one if you need comfortable reliable transport!

Faults:

The light for the gear shifter didn't work so I had no idea what gear I was selecting at night. New bulb cost less than a pound, but it took quite a while to change once I had dismantled what felt like half the dash to get to it!

Car makes a squealing noise around 2000rpm, but it gets quieter as it warms up. The noise is coming from around the water and power steering pumps, but the belts seem tight and I can't work out exactly what is causing the noise. Does anyone have any ideas? I have heard other similar Corollas and a Carina making the same noise.

General Comments:

I bought the car for the reliability - my old one from New Zealand had old car faults, but none you couldn't live with.

Lots of electrics on the Executive model which worries me a bit if it goes wrong, but all seems OK so far.

Interior is brilliant - clear and easy to use, great ergonomics, comfy too. Very blue though - dark blue paint and dark blue interior a bit heavy. It would be much nicer if it had a Grey interior to break it up a bit!

Engine is a honey, would work better with manual box as it prefers high revs.

Handling is great for the real world - its no sports car, but I don't drive it like a nut case any more so that's not an issue. Nice comfy ride, stable and smooth on the motorway. Nice and roomy too, and the lift-back has a huge boot.

Both my Toyota's have been good cars, I will definitely be buying Toyota's again.

As a follow up to my previous review, I managed to resolve the annoying noise. One hefty dose of WD40 onto the alternator, water pump spindle and fan belt, and the noise vanished. I suspect it was the rubber on the fan belt getting hard and not gripping properly which was making the squeaking noise.
