1999 Toyota RAV4 VX petrol

Summary:

Most reliable car you would ever own

Faults:

Just wear and tear. One front wheel bearing. Front brake pads. Rear box on exhaust. Tyres. Steering rack.

General Comments:

When my old Vauxhall Cavalier finally failed his MOT, I needed a practical vehicle for my dog walking business. Bought a 1999 RAV4 as it ticked all the boxes. Low entry at the rear for dogs to jump in, also side opening door so dogs can't just jump out. Reasonable handling. Good visibility. Easy parking. Easy getting in and out for me (do a lot of that when collecting/returning dogs to their homes). Plenty of room....though I have to say, rear passenger space for humans must have been modeled on small Japanese people.

1999 Toyota RAV4 GX 5dr 2.0

Faults:

Rear washer nozzle tube detached.

Steel wheels are starting to show a bit of rust and look tatty.

General Comments:

Autobox is really smooth and changes when you need it to. Can turn the overdrive off to restrict it to three gears when climbing hills. Good ride quality and really easy to drive.

Power is a bit limited, as a 2.0 engine is a bit small for a relatively large car, but the bonus is the combined 30mpg you get - excellent for a full time 4x4 albeit a "softroader".

Rear legroom isn't great, but fine if it's just for kids.

Seat fabric in the GX is a bit garish - try and get a VX with leather and alloys.

Lastly, I think it was a bit mean of Toyota not to include a load cover for the boot as standard - Toyota parts and accessories aren't cheap.

Overall very pleased.

1999 Toyota RAV4 GX 5 door 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A good compromise between off-road and on

Faults:

Zero.

General Comments:

Faster than you'd think. Road holding a bit vague.

Pity the rear door opens sideways instead of up.

ABS works well.

Not easy to get long loads in ie. planks of wood etc. No cover for the boot area. This is quite a security risk.

Spare keys cost £50 and the remote £110!

Delivers 30mpg unless driven very hard, which is good for this type of vehicle.
