2001 Toyota Yaris VVTi GLS 1.0 16v petrol
Summary:
The Yaris is very basic but very reliable
Faults:
Other than the consumables expected of age and mileage (tyres, brake discs and pads, exhaust, suspension parts, etc) and a flat battery I had to replace, nothing worth mentioning. It is a very reliable car if you service it on time. Cosmetically it is looking very rough on the inside and outside - but it is over 20 years old now.
General Comments:
A second car we have had in the family a long time, putting around 40K mileage on it reliably. The Yaris is not a car that you get excited about driving, but you can rest assured a looked after one will never let you down. We bought Toyota on the strength of our old early 1990's Corolla that was handed down to me previously by my father which was also a reliable car.
Not fun to drive, and the 1.0 petrol engine is weak as expected, barely has 70 horse power. It does manage over 45 mpg however, cheap to insure and service. Cannot say fairer than that. The car does handle quite nicely though, maybe the faster versions are more interesting to drive.
Interior is dull and a bit cramped for my size, rear space in particular is a joke, but the seats are comfortable enough. GLS model has enough electric toys for the car's time. Has a sunroof also which is a nice touch. The car is pretty quiet and smooth around town at lower speeds, on motorways is gets a bit noisy, not the best car for longer journeys, but it will get you there.
If you are after cheap reliable basic transport, take a look at the Yaris, buy nothing less than a looked after car however. They are famously reliable, but forget anyone's claims of not servicing and not looking after them and claiming they are still running perfectly - like any car they will breakdown if you abuse them.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

My entire family have Yaris' and they're ultra reliable. I still won't be swapping my Focus though.
