1968 Triumph GT6 MK 1 2.0

Summary:

Classy poor mans e type

Faults:

The rear shock absorbers mounting bracket sheared due to the poor roads in Ireland.

The front wheel has a tendency to get red hot due to brakes sticking when you get near 100mph!

Otherwise car is very good.

General Comments:

The GT6 is a nice little car. I previously owned one and it had the 2.5L engine. This was very quick, but it kept ripping the rear suspension stays from the body. It also used to eat differentials and would rip the crown wheel in two.

Great fun though!

The GT6 was sold only with a 2 litre engine. If yours had a 2.5 litre engine, it was modified by a previous owner.

"modified by the previous owner" - True, but it sounds as though he had fun in it!

1968 Triumph GT6 Mk1 2.0 straight six

Summary:

An excellent, fast and stylish two seater hatchback

Faults:

The carbs have been running too rich and flooded the engine (Stromberg CD150s, poorly set up); the gearbox input bearing wore out and I broke a rocker arm three times due to debris lying in the cam follower.

General Comments:

An excellent two seater - far, far superior to the Spitfire.

Bags of torque from the 2.0 litre straight six.

Manual overdrive gives a six speed box.

The rear suspension scare stories are vastly exaggerated!

Rearward vision can be a bit restricted without wing or door mirrors.

Cabin can get quite hot, but there are plenty of opening windows!
