1992 Vauxhall Calibra 8v 2.0

Summary:

Just like the name, a very cool car

Faults:

Car stalls when starting the car straight after a journey, but I have rev the engine and seems to fix it. Apart from that no major problems have occurred since ownership.

General Comments:

Sexy looking car, why Vauxhall stop making this model only god knows.

This car is so reliable even with high mileage.

A stunner to admire, look and own.

Very cheap to buy for a expensive sporty look.

I am going to buy another newer Calibra.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 16v 2.0i

Summary:

A high performance, good looking, generally reliable car

Faults:

My head blew at 102,000 miles.

The tappets started to knock at 98,000 miles.

Apart from that, the car is in good nick.

General Comments:

The Calibra is one of the sweetest sexiest motors you can buy for the money. It's quick, generally reliable and comfortable.

It is a real head turner if you get the right modifications done to it, although the Cavalier-like handling and dashboard are the only things that I don't like. Apart from that, it is a real sexy sports car and very affordable.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 8v

Summary:

A good looking coupe

Faults:

No problems so far.

General Comments:

A big jump up from a 1.6 Cavalier, I have had lots of fun with it. My plan now is to add a sports exhaust, big wheels and a body kit.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0i 8v petrol

Summary:

Attractive, stylish and different, but the 8v is all bark and no bite

Faults:

Exhaust.

Head gasket.

Suspension.

Excessive tire wear.

Cambelt.

General Comments:

Still an attractive car even by today's standards, but the 8 valve is definitely not recommended. Sluggish off the mark and very poor when it comes to cornering. Mainly suitable for motorway or "A" road cruising at speed.

Recently the price of Calibra's has fallen through the floor making them accessible to boy racers which is why the insurance is very high.

Ignore what some say, this is not a Cavalier SRi. They are half the price and much faster, but if you want something different that still turns peoples heads get yourself a Calibra 16v. I intend to.

I own a 8V Calibra. They are certainly not sluggish and the suspension is the same as the 16V therefore the handling is the same!! The car does 0 - 60 in around 8.5 seconds and a top end of in excess of 130mph. This is more respectable than most "Hot hatches" like the GTI's, XR2i's and Celica's etc. The 8V even has more torque than the 16V. With a few choice mods the Calibra 8V is great value and fun and the insurance is reasonable.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 16v petrol

Summary:

Don't judge a book by its cover

Faults:

Smell of petrol vapour in cabin.

Misfire.

Temperature gauge not working, needs further investigation.

Cuts out at junctions.

Steering column worn.

Steering bushes needing constant atention.

Engine mounts, clutch, starter motor and rust on front edge of bonnet and rear arches.

General Comments:

I thought a full main dealer service history meant something...., not when it's from Vauxhall.

It looks fantastic and people say why did I sell it, but now I drive a Golf GTi and people don't believe me when I say it's a better car.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0i petrol

Faults:

After 70,000 mile service it was found that there was a damaged head and it had to be renewed at a cost of £400. The suspention bushings were broken.

General Comments:

All round good quality car but when something big goes wrong it is dear to get fixed, especially by a Vauxhall dealer.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 4x4 2.0 16v turbo petrol

Faults:

Intermittent 4x4 warning light comes on then you have no 4x4 until you switch off ignition and restart car. Seems worse in summer.

General Comments:

Great car.

WOW great review, I got everything I need to know about this car, thanks.

1992 Vauxhall Calibra 2.0i 8v 2.0i 8v petrol

Faults:

Suspension bushes were worn at last road test, the exhaust is about to go, and there are some rust spots on and around the bottom of the doors. Small leaks in the sump gasket and the rocker cover gasket; only cost 20 quid to get fixed.

General Comments:

Performance is ok; car is quite noisy approaching the red line; but hey, it does have an 8v engine. The original exhaust has now lasted 65,000 miles, which is good, but it's now starting to sound a bit rough. No major problems with car, and it looks fantastic! (especially in white!)
