Withstood its great age and mileage very well.

Chassis gave excellent handling and engine gave excellent performance and reliability.

The car was also very well built inside and out.

Space and comfort were both impressive.

1985 Vauxhall Cavalier Comander 1.6 petrol

Summary:

Don't consider anything else for a cheap stealth car

Faults:

Replaced starter motor at 90000.

Imobilizer stopped working at about 123000.

New exhaust needed at 100000.

Parcel shelf caved in (my fault).

Boot Rusted.

General Comments:

Shame to have sold it as it was damn reliable.

Started everyday, but not always first time.

Was driven hard, but cared for.

No rust on rest of car apart from boot.

Shifted like an SRI and crused at 70mph, got it up to 125mph once!

High insurance due to rare model.

Looked cool in silver with alloys with 3" exhaust.

Comfortable and solid.

'Superb', the word that sums up Cavaliers in one.

1985 Vauxhall Cavalier L 1.6

Faults:

Carbon rod broken on distributor cap.

Broken brake light and front indicator (that was my fault!)

Reversing lights don't work.

Rust on boot lid and petrol filler.

Dodgy petrol gauge.

Oil leak.

Dodgy wiring in steering column.

General Comments:

Brilliant car. Only owned it since November 99, but it really rocks. Plenty of space both for yourself and for my music kit in the boot. Huge parcel shelf guarantees loads of space for a pair of 16" speakers too!

Oh and keep putting petrol in it, otherwise you'll run out (like I did).

1985 Vauxhall Cavalier LX 1.6 weber twin choke

Faults:

The door handles broke, the drivers seat easily ripped.

General Comments:

The cars are fast if you take out the 1.6, put a 1.8 with a 1.6 gearbox into it, remove the air box and get a Sportex performance back box on it. The thing will shift like a whippit on steroids.

1985 Vauxhall Cavalier L 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Front and rear wheel bearing.

Petrol pumps (3).

Water pump.

Radiator.

Brake pipes.

General Comments:

I've had this car since new and it has now covered 204,000 miles, all on the original clutch and camshaft. The paintwork is a real mess but little welding has been needed for the MOT. It's a great shame Vauxhall didn't make the body more rust proof, if they did I'm sure it would go on for another 200,000 miles as it still doesn't burn any oil. This has been changed every 5,000 miles and may be why the engine is lasting so well and hasn't let me down yet.
