2014 Vauxhall Insignia Design 2.0 CDTi ecoFLEX

Summary:

A great motorway cruiser

Faults:

Rear hatch locking motor failed (common fault).

EGR valve needed attention.

Various parts replaced as per wear and tear - new exhaust at rear, new battery, brake discs and pads.

Air con not as good as it used to be.

General Comments:

Had this Insignia a while now and has been a great car doing serious mileage up and down the UK motorways (I'm a travelling sales guy, exactly who this car was designed for, what a stereotype I know).

2.0 CDTI ecoFLEX engine has plenty of power and is economical. Start stop feature is annoying and I always switch it off. Fuel consumption difference is marginal. It does around 60 mpg or more on average, don't believe the 70 - 80 mpg hype - I tried my best even with start stop enabled and the best I got was 69 mpg.

Still, a fine car to drive and great on motorways as mentioned. Very quiet and smooth.

Design model is very basic, go for an SRi or above.

I get 50 - 60 mpg out of my diesel "ecoFLEX" engine, the idea of 70 - 80 mpg is crazy, no one in reality is going to achieve this. The best I have had is 64 mpg - that is with the car empty on a very long motorway cruise during summer.

A taxi driver friend of mine was getting a genuine 70 mpg out of his car (again, on a long drive with no passengers or extra weight), but it was a nearly new Skoda Octavia 1.6 TDi; the Insignia is a much heavier car and will likely not get near that figure.

2014 Vauxhall Insignia ecoFLEX SRi 2.0 CDTi turbo diesel

Summary:

Good looking basic transport

Faults:

Not much other than general wear and tear and servicing.

General Comments:

The Insignia is a sharp looking car from the outside, especially in darker colours. My black SRi is among the best looking in the range. Big alloy wheels really stand out. I like the look of the car.

Inside it is a different a story - dashboard looks like a space ship, and as others have mentioned, I do not like the electronic handbrake, as per modern car. A lever would be better, but as this is an updated 2014 model, they all seem to have the electronic handbrake now. Go for a 2009 model if you want a lever. Comfortable though and SRi models are very well equipped.

Driving the 2.0 diesel ecoFLEX is fast and economical; handling is nice also. High 60's MPG is the average, 70 is possible but you have to drive very conservatively. I gave lower scores for dealer and costs however as some servicing is expensive for a Vauxhall I thought.

Not much more you can say about it - this car is an improvement over the old Vectra, however the Insignia does not seem to be holding its value very well anymore - but this means you can get a great used deal and have a good modern reliable car for a nice price.

They are very popular cars, probably more common than the Mondeo. You can get them real cheap, used deals are as good as it gets. 2010 - 2013 cars can be had for less than 4 grand.
