By far the best car I've ever owned. If you can live with the fuel consumption, get one, you won't regret it...
In terms of equipment, it's impossible to beat for the money... well built too...

Don't want to swap!
Issues with over revving since purchase - Infrequent but becoming more noticeable, often getting up to 4000rpm before gear change effected.
Several visits to garages has resulted in various opinions ranging from 'lack of experience in driving an Automatic' to crank/cam shaft sensor faults.
Most recent visit to have cam shaft sensor replaced (which did not fix the fault) has resulted in the car running too poorly to drive - poor acceleration due to gears not deploying, serious over revving and poor gearbox management up and down the gears.
Garage has now suggested faulty gearbox (not recognizing pressure changes to force gear change?)
Any other Omega owners familiar with similar fault?
Love my OMEGA - Loved my Carlton.
Reliable and a real pleasure to drive.
Handles well at all speed.
Acceptable running costs on longer journeys (especially motorway).
Spacious cabin and boot space.

Try this superb owners site. I have recently acquired a 2000 2.2 auto, and they have been exceptionally helpful, with impeccable advice given on a variety of themes within hours of posting a query. I have also sourced cheap parts and specialists through it - invaluable!
Carsurvey is fantastic, but this Omega site is more focused to the vehicle, and is used by all the Omega experts and enthusiasts hourly!
Can anyone give me a realistic general fuel economy figure for this car, as I am dithering about buying one (Auto)? No fancy figures produced by unrealistic driving methods.
You'll get 25 MPG at very best out of any of the V6's, less in traffic or fast driving.
The 4 cylinder 2.0 models will get 30 MPG or a little more on good long drive on a summers day, but again, you'd have to drive very carefully, high 20's is more likely on average, especially the 2.2 with an auto box.

10 out of 10 for image and comfort. A lot is being said that the Omega is plain and boring, fair enough, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder right? I think it is really elegant, reminds me in many ways of my Granada Scorpio which I loved to bits.
First day driving home distance approx 38 miles. I had just filled up and felt a jolt in my chest when I noticed the fuel gauge had gone from 1/1 to just under 3/4 full!!! Next day topped up and it only came to £13. Admittedly I applied a little more pressure to the pedal a few times on the motorway, giggling like a little kid as everything moving ahead suddenly seemed to be stationary as the big beast whispered past.
Golden rule is simple drive sympathetically if you want to reduce visits to the filling station. All else is 10/10; I don't thing you could excel much better in terms of comfort and luxury with any other car without the expense.

Nice, but expensive to maintain
The day after purchase the idle of the car became erratic at stand still. After a few days of this occurring, I took it into a local garage to be informed that the idle valve was sticking; this is a common fault with Ecotec engines of this age and mileage. They cleaned the valve and all was good for about 3 weeks, although the garage did inform me that this may not fix the actual problem fully.
The problem then started again with the revs increasing at stand still. £240.00 later - a new idle valve and labour, the car was going fine until the alternator decided to fry the electrics on the way back from work! Smoke appeared from behind the dashboard, so I pulled over and called the AA; they came and said the alternator was increasing voltage to all the electrics.
The car went back to the garage - £250.00 for a new dashboard - second hand alternative (cheaper), and £190.00 for a new alternator.
I've had Vauxhall cars for years, this has been the most problematic car I've had.
It's a shame, it's a lovely car to drive, very comfy and handles like a dream. Downside is the faults that have occurred and the fuel economy is poor.
The cabin is spacious, and although some may say it looks dull, I feel the GLS spec looks more in keeping than the false wood found on the CD models.

Hi. Sounds like sticking pressure valves or faulty ecu sender or solenoid, check oil level and filter in gearbox you may have to change both, worst of all brake bands burnt out. All the best.
