1999 Vauxhall Vectra GSi 2.5 V6 petrol

Summary:

A wolf in whippet's clothing

Faults:

Mid exhaust box collapsed - I'm having to wait ages for a replacement to come through as they're not standard (and the dealer is crap).

Electric mirror adjuster knob fell off.

Front door woofers keep blowing - obviously not rated for CD (and loud) usage. The right one went first, on having that replaced the left one has now gone.

Had to have all 4 (Yokohama) tyres replaced - they wore out very quickly - maybe that was the last driver!

General Comments:

I've had this car for 6 weeks now and have never had so much fun. It's quicker than the standard V6 and with the lowered suspension it goes round corners like you wouldn't believe. The ride is very firm - a bit too firm for driving smoothly but who cares? You can cover ground very quickly. It looks cool as well with the body kit, big chromed exhausts and 17" alloys.

The bad points: that the speakers don't do justice to the stereo (see above) and there are lot of creaks and groans from the inside due to the harshness of the ride. The gear change also lets down the performance - it's too notchy to change quickly. Also the gearing is VERY long so you really have to wind it up by which time you're usually running out of road!

Overall it scares the pants off some of the bigger boys who think it's only a rep mobile.

In response to the person who thinks a ladder with an 1100cc motorbike engine is really an adequate way of getting a point across, I would have just one thing to say, How much did the Audi or BMW cost? How much does it cost to service? How much are the spare parts? Who really cares about street cred. Actually never mind that, it would make me feel even better when the so called cool Audi or BMW loses power toward the top end, but my uncool Vectra GSi just keeps on going. It may be just an ordinary un-cool Vauxhall, but it does the job just fine. I guess that's more than one thing to say eh squire!!!

Summary:

Good when it goes

Faults:

What hasn't, the car has been in the garage more times than it has been out. This weeks problems include a sticking handbrake, oil leaks (new engine 2 months ago), dodgy central locking. Vauxhall dealers can't fix problems as they occur time after time.

General Comments:

We are on first name terms with the dealers, they even got a Christmas card from us. One good thing is the car has only covered low milage due to the amount of time in hire cars.

1999 Vauxhall Vectra SRI 140 2.0 petrol

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Previously had a 1.8 LS... which had endless irritating problems.

The 140 is a total transformation - stiffer and lower suspension, great torquey engine (K & N filter helps), better steering and C/R gearbox means it is a real pleasure to drive.

Plenty of kit too.

T Reg SRI 140, No problems at all. Very quick. Great feeling whilst driving gives presence on the road. Going to buy a newer one soon.

I own a 1998 s reg and it handles well and I think it is great value for money. Not as quick as I thought it would be, but needs tuning, excellent.

Faults:

I had this car on loan for a week so I can't comment on this, although the fog lights didn't work.

General Comments:

What a fast car, I've got a V6 Mondeo as my normal car and this seemed a lot faster and handled better, although it was brand new and mine's 4 years old. Still, I am really considering buying one.
