1966 Volkswagen Beetle 1.3

Summary:

Terrible car with a great engine

Faults:

The brake master cylinder failed, and the wiper mechanism was so worn I tied some string to the wiper arms to stop them overshooting and locking up.

The heater never worked; it was the only car where I ever experienced the windscreen icing up on the inside as I drove it!

The lights were dismal, I never got them working properly.

General Comments:

I bought the car for next to nothing before they had become fashionable. I knew it was a rolling wreck when I bought it, so I had no complaints about its many faults or lack of comfort.

The engine was outstanding, I remember digging my way into it after it had been parked up for a week when it got buried in snow. In spite of the sub zero temperature, the 6 volt battery simply gave it a couple of turns and it sprang into life. It never used any oil and didn't have a big appetite for petrol either.

I sold it for a substantial profit to someone who only wanted the engine.

1966 Volkswagen Beetle 1300 Deluxe 1.3

Summary:

I'm never going to sell it!

Faults:

Nothing! No, really!

I had the original engine rebuilt at 47,240 miles, but that was due to vandalism (drained oil), so not the car's fault.

General Comments:

Very reliable car, been driven daily for 4 years and still picks up the trophies at shows! Was repainted in 1998 as the original paintwork suffered from those knocks and dings cars inevitably pick up in car parks, but apart from that it's totally original.

New tyres at 36,000 miles.

Spartan, but lovely interior, very comfortable seats, loads of headroom for both front and rear passengers.

Not exactly the fastest car in the world, but the little 1300 can go all day without a single complaint. Cheap to maintain and so easy to service.
