1993 Volkswagen Corrado VR6 2.9

Summary:

Best car ever

Faults:

Not much - needed new suspension all round, plus oddly a relay blew.

General Comments:

I love driving / owning this car. It really is a pleasure. Aqua blue with black leather - well done Karmann.

The engine is a dream though a tiny bit thirsty on oil & fuel. Worth looking for a well owned one and become a member of the C club :)

1993 Volkswagen Corrado VR6 2.9 petrol

Summary:

Buy with care and you won't regret it

Faults:

Has just had a rebuilt engine; although I was hoping to just have the head done. Oil consumption was approximately 300 miles per liter, 1000 miles after buying it with a supposed full warranty with a full service history from a Volkswagen main dealer. On claiming through the warranty the dealer said I had to pay to have it stripped before they could decide if it was a warranty claim. It appears the car was either overheated or ran low on oil before I bought it.

General Comments:

Very quick car even with a worn engine -it ran very quietly. Apart from smoke on the overrun it was fine; nothing else has gone wrong; 32 miles per gallon fuel consumption on long journeys.

Handles very well.

Good build quality.

Turns heads and stands up to much more modern competition.

1993 Volkswagen Corrado VR6 2.9i petrol

Faults:

Where to begin...

Radiator, water pump gasket, sunroof motor, headlight switch, heater ctrls, clutch, uses 1 ltr of oil every 500 miles, wheel bearings, bump stops, door locks, electric mirrors, VW cat 1 alarm, misc switches, poor radio reception, trim falling off, misfire, MFA failure.

General Comments:

Dane's of Chester are a pile of crap at fixing and diagnosing things. I bought with 42k miles and they spent about 8k on the warranty on bits that went wrong in a year. Pile 'o' crap. Danes had the car in 6 times to get the radio reception HALF decent and THEY did 200 miles in the process!!!!!!!!!

Writing to their customer services was pointless - they didn't reply. Writing to the MD of the franchise was pointless. Servicing was done wrong and very very poor service from them (ordering wrong parts etc). The car was a cracker though :)

In all my years servicing and repairing VW's, I have never fitted as many parts to one Corrado. They are normally very, very good, you must have bought a dog of a car.

My VR6 has 85k on the clock and I have driven it very hard for the last 56k (includes every track day I can attend). Apart from servicing the only thing it has required is a new headlight switch.

The cars aren't the problem.... just the dealers, but owners will insist on using them!

Don't use vw dealers they are expensive rubbish there are lots of specialists who can tend to your needs, FOR LESS.

That's often not true, ask my local auto service chain that stripped out the oil pan drain on my Fathers GTI VR6 and forgot to put in a bushing in when they re-did the struts on my Golf, which over the past 10,000 miles has caused the struts, upper and lower control arms all to be ruined.

The Corrados had a lot of problems and the parts are outrageously expensive. Example: Fender for Corrado-$800. Fender for a Chevy-$60.

Maybe in the US Corrado parts are expensive, but they aren't in Europe. I am unaware of the problems these cars are reputed to have. All I've heard about are faulty door handles and sunroofs; that's it.

I bought a 1995 Corrado for £800 on eBay. It came with no service history and a smashed bumper. I've had no problems with it whatsoever, and it runs like a watch. Also managed to get a bumper for it for £50, and its the same colour!! I probably couldn't get a Chevy fender if I tried - for any price!!!

Corrado is a great practical sports cars.

1993 Volkswagen Corrado G60 1.8 supercharged petrol

Faults:

To date, with only 25,000 miles on the clock nothing has gone wrong. It has been serviced every 3-5000 miles, and seems to have the typical German build quality.

General Comments:

Great fun to drive, especially on the open road over 3,500 rpm. Cornering and stability are excellent. Having had a VR6, a 323i, and a Audi cabriolet previously this is the most fun car to drive.

Performance off the line is not blistering but once going there is very little which is this practical, fun and fast !

1993 Volkswagen Corrado 16v 2.2 16v petrol

Faults:

Jerking when driving off after a nights storage. Was rectified by cleaning distributor contacts and splashing WD40 onto rotor, HT leads (both ends) and coil. 5 min job.

After dropping the standard 2 litre lump and swopping it out for an overbored 2.2 ported, gas flowed uprated cam, balanced crank jobbie, this baby beats the pants off any RS/Uno/Alfa etc that's been at the receiving end of the fat supersprint blower at the rear of it. Superb Karmaan styling. Unrivalled VeeDub build quality and handling, esp after uprating the drivetrain and braking system with group N suspension/discs/pads/clutch.

General Comments:

FORD users eat your hearts out, this Vee Dub's here to stay.

Only one better than this is a VR6...
