1989 Volkswagen Golf driver 1.6

Summary:

Fantastic

Faults:

Very little has went wrong,

Needed brakes for mot and the rear shock absorbers replaced.

General Comments:

This was a runabout I got for £200 and has been reliable, comftorable and a great driver

Nothing fancy inside, but everything you need.

Has got GTI arches and the grille on it,and I think it looks great.

Automatic gear box is not the fastest, but when it's going it's great.

1989 Volkswagen Golf Driver 1.6 petrol

Faults:

Clutch cable failure - easily replaced with a temporary repair cable that is of better quality than VW part.

Cold air affects the carburettor and running - solved by permanently opening valve that heats the carburettor from the exhaust system.

Seats wear easily, don't consider mine to be high mileage, driver seat is torn and can feel the frame.

Boot lid is rust prone, large hole behind numberplate currently.

General Comments:

So simple to work on and parts easily available due to its long-lived popularity.

Tidy, spacious interior.

Looks smart and presentable and slightly GTi.

Quite fun to drive, a basic car with a bit of go and potential.

1989 Volkswagen Golf GTi 16valve 1.8

Summary:

Goes like the wind

Faults:

Needed a new wheel bearing on the passenger side front.

General Comments:

This is the best car I have ever driven. Its peformance is fantastic and fuel mpg is very good considering it's a hot hatch... can honestly say I can't fault the car one bit... everybody should have to drive a VW Golf GTi mk11 and I know they'd never look back...

1989 Volkswagen Golf CL 1.6

Summary:

My solid reliable friend

Faults:

Brake caliper seized, had to be replaced.

Had an intermittent fault with the car spluttering to a halt on motorways, only to start and run OK a few minutes later, finally attributed to carburettor freezing, easily fixed by replacing the hose to the air intake.

Choke pull down unit replaced.

General Comments:

Never failed to start or to get me home in eight years.

Would buy another if this car ever breaks, but I can't see it happening.

Completely rust free, even though it is not garaged and I rarely clean it.

Handles well, not particularly fast, but quick enough.

1989 Volkswagen Golf GTI 16v 1.8

Summary:

Pocket Rocket for a budget price!

Faults:

Front wheel bearing.

Front outer CV boots (both sides).

Exhaust mounts (all!).

Headlight (a bit dim due to earth fault).

Back box.

General Comments:

Blinding performance (0-60 in 8 seconds).

Sticks to the road like glue.

Can do 48MPG, but not if you drive fast!

Bombing around the Cornish roads I usually get 35MPG, which isn't bad for a hot hatch.

As yet never failed to start (fingers crossed!)

Never broken down whilst I've had it.

Body work is solid.

Swapped my K reg 1.4 Clio RT and paid £300 for this car, I got the better deal as the Clio was scrapped last year!

1989 Volkswagen Golf 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Good, solid performer

Faults:

Two new front tires were fitted just before I bought it.

Exhaust needed completely replaced at around 108000 miles.

Driver seat is well-worn: to be expected for a car of this age.

Gear-box packed in at 115000 miles. I'm told Volkswagen don't make 4-speed gear boxes for the Golf any longer so unless I find one from scrap, the car's off the road for good.

General Comments:

I bought a Golf because I heard it was a reliable second-hand car. I think this was borne out. I only paid a reasonably small amount of money for the car and, other than replacing the exhaust, I've had no other major outlay on the car: it's been a good buy.

It's a fairly plain car, but it has more punch than the 309 I previously owned, especially when fully loaded (even with the same-sized, relatively small engine).

Does the job as a 'runaround' car.

Reconditioned exchange 4 Speed gear boxes are still available. My sister got one fitted by a company called Mc Volks in Westcott, Buckinghamshire. They provide excellent service and incredibly cheap rates hence their long waiting list. Apparently, the 4 speed boxes were never as good as the 5 speeds, and usually pack up at around 90,000 miles.
