1989 Volkswagen Golf GTi 1.8 8v

Summary:

Excellent car. Better than any Ford!

Faults:

Rocker cover gasket 3 times! I suspect this is due to warped rocker cover.

All HT leads replaced due to misfire.

Clutch lever snapped.

Heater control valves failed causing no internal heating (found this out on first cold night of winter!!).

General Comments:

Overall an excellent car. My parents owned the car previously and they had it bought it 11,000 9 months old (11,000miles).

The car has very good handling and is responsive. Just a little pointer to owners of 8v GTI's, use Shell Optimax, you can really tell the difference.

I have driven hire cars (Fords, Vauxhalls) that are less than six months old and their engines sound rattly and knackered. The golf has 121000 miles and still sounds new when started and just soaks miles up no sweat.

Excellent car.

Well, thought I'd update the report now it's 2004.

The car is now on 161,000miles and still going. However, I had to take it off the road for 3-4 weeks in November due to the power steering rack failing.

I also did the clutch, hydraulic tappets and cam belt at the same time.

I hope it will go on to 200k now with relatively few troubles!

1989 Volkswagen Golf G60 Limited 1.8 G60 16-valve

Summary:

Outstanding

Faults:

The fan belt was on its way out and was/is available from VW Motorsport in Germany. UK dealers had no knowledge of this car, and many part numbers are not recognised on the VW UK computer.

Other than someone "nicking" the leather interior, no problems.

I do have a vibration, which suddenly appeared. It's only noticeable at 3000-3500 RPM. Either side of that and it disappears? Any ideas? Front engine mount replaced, but still hasn't cured it. Possibly the exhaust touching at that rev range???

General Comments:

Still an excellent car. One of 70 made, and believed to be one of three in the UK.

210bhp, 4x4, 0-60 in 7 seconds and a top speed of 142mph.

The ultimate Mk2 Golf.

1989 Volkswagen Golf 1.6

Summary:

Beats new cars hands down!

Faults:

Rear tailgate bulb.

General Comments:

A totally fantastic car! Drives like new, and I even test drove a new Ford Fiesta before this car.. this beats it hands down! My only gripe is the steering is a little heavy, but reassuring on long drives and very positive. The ride is very comfortable and quiet, and all the buttons feel like they're carved from stone.

Broken rear springs (twice).

General Comments:

Fantastic car. UK prices now reduced due to imports.

I've had 4 Golf GTI's and now will not drive anything else.

1989 Volkswagen Golf Base 1.3 petrol

Summary:

Budget car, but extremely reliable, safe and sound

Faults:

New sump, new starter motor, new petrol pump, new radiator, new front left brake caliper, new ball joints, new rocker gasket, new front right shock absorber in addition to the normal exhaust, tyres, brake pads/discs etc.

General Comments:

A few unrelated things have had to be replaced since I bought it (probably because the car is roughly halfway through its lifetime). However, the exterior has NO rust and is in great condition, and the interior is like new. The car really shows it is built to last - it drives like new. Regular oil and filter changes (every 3000 miles) will help this car go on to 200,000 miles plus!

This car is a bargain and although it doesn't have all the mod-cons like electric windows, central locking, power steering, airbags, sunroof, air con. etc., I don't miss them. I do know, however, that I have a car which will last for a long time. Golfs always hold their value, and although parts are expensive, they last longer.
