2020 Volkswagen Golf TSi Life 1.5 petrol
Summary:
All digital, all nonsense
Faults:
Nothing so far.
General Comments:
New Golf is smart looking and very much styled like the previous generation with subtle differences; I like the look of this car and it is unmistakably a Golf.
Life model is well equipped, all the modern features as standard. Interior looks smart. Not as refined as you would expect though - there is a lot of engine noise at higher revs.
1.5 petrol engine has good acceleration and is very responsive. You will get between 50 - 60 miles per gallon; for petrol this is excellent, my previous diesel Vauxhall Astra only managed this on a good day, but it was 10 years old.
So all in all a typically great performing modern car with all the mod cons you would expect, plain and boring, nothing to hate, nothing to get excited about either. My biggest problem with this car and a lot of modern cars in general is the "digital" obsession they seem to have to make the interior like a smart phone. Maybe I am getting old, but I just do not care about little sliders to make the dash surrounds different colors, touch screen for every bloody option (analogue controls would be better for some features) connectivity for WiFi, etc etc. Just a tonne of features I will never use. Do not even get me started on the electronic handbrake - a real pain for drivers used to a lever. As the advert says "All digital Golf" well great if you like that sort of thing, a gimmick if you do not. Don't get me wrong, I like this car, and it's recommended, just take a long test drive first and make sure you can live with its modern quirks before you buy.
Would you buy another car from this manufacturer? Yes

Who is betting the next generation Golf/Jetta will bring back the knobs?

I couldn't agree more with those who think that the digital dashboard on the Mk8 Golf is a complete disaster and actually very dangerous.
Even worse, I understand the Mk8 was rushed into production before the software was fully tested and dealers are now tearing their hair out having been swamped with so many complaints of things not working properly.
As said, if you're tempted to buy a Mk8, make sure you give it a good test run in order to be sure you know what you're getting.
I'm so pleased I bought a 2020 "last off the assembly line" Golf Mk7.5 rather than a 2020 "first off the assembly line" Golf Mk8!

They won't - the same controls, for economies of scale, not only will be spread throughout the VW brand, they will be forcibly migrated into all Skoda, SEAT, Audi, probably the rest. It will get worse before it gets better. Unless they are sued, then watch them come out with knobs quickly.

Most cars nowadays are a smart phone on wheels unfortunately.

I've seen it on Youtube. It is utter garbage (I don't use this expression often) to think interior controls in cars must be a tablet interface. These designers are hopelessly clueless. Imagine trying voice command with the windows open, or when listening to loud music or when you are a mute person or when your kids are yelling. I'm just so frustrated when designers completely disregard functionality.
