Faults:

When purchased:

Driver's seat worn.

Driver's seat cord to pull forward snapped.

General condition was appalling. Engine was half dismantled.

Not bad for £50(y).

General Comments:

I have driven this car once or twice, and myself put up a nice 25 miles LOL.

At the moment I've got my mum driving it, and she hates it ha, just because it doesn't have any fancy gizmo's like A/C, brake servos, all that jazz. With me, I love it.

Like in one of the other reviews, somebody said "without a brake servo, applying the brakes requires more pressure". True! It makes you more focused on your stopping distance and how you respond.

To be fair, this car doesn't drive like my last one, a Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0, but hey, I like comfort, not speed. OK, my Cavvy was nice, but considering repair costs, I would go CLASSIC every time (Y). I've had this car a year and it's taken me that long to MOT prep it (won't trust anyone else, as I'm not paying stupid prices for silly repairs I can do). Passed the MOT first time :D and it's running around again.

Faults:

Clutch wore badly and needed replacing at 60,000 miles.

Tyres needed replacing at 62,000 miles.

Cassette ejection button failed at 65,000 miles and whole stereo had to be replaced.

General Comments:

A well built, reliable and economical small car.

Well worth the £1,800 that I paid for it.

Held its value well over the next year and I obtained £1,500 from the resale a year later.

Not very exciting, although its good qualities more than compensated for this.

Faults:

Not much.

The spring under the gear lever doesn't push it up anymore, so you have to pull up the gear lever to stop yourself from putting it into reverse by mistake!

Sunroof leaks when it rains, and the damp means there's now mold growing on the roof!

General Comments:

For a car that's 18 years old it's extremely quick! Compared to other 1.3 cars I've driven, even much newer ones, it still has the fastest acceleration!

It doesn't have one spot of rust, which is good considering it's lived by the Sea for several years!

The engine is now starting to show its age. But at 189,000 miles you can't blame it! On long journeys, if it gets hot the oil pressure warning light comes on, along with a very annoying buzzer! I suspect its probably just normal engine wear as it comes to the end of its happy life :' (.

If anyone wants to buy a car of this age, a Polo in my opinion is a wonderful choice. Good build quality, and the saloon versions like mine give it a very interesting quirky look!

Faults:

Pierburg carb needed re tuning to pass Mot emmisions.

Worn brake lines replaced at 117000.

Bad interior water leak traced to slight shunt on left wing disturbing sealing at joint and allowing water in to the car by the glove box area.

Speedo and Tacho replaced at 110000 miles as both were faulty.

Other than that just usual stuff such as cables, cv boots, and tyres.

Battery box rusted out - fixed with fiber glass.

General Comments:

A mates sister was desperate to sell the car before she went abroad for a year. Having owned a 1 litre hatch at the time I could not resist the purchase. 400 bells exchanged and a rare early comet blue metallic coupe s was mine. Having owned the car for a year now all I can say is what a gem. It goes well although only a 4 speed, its comfortable at 80mph at around 4200 revs. The car had been fitted with an extreme 70mm lowering kit when I bought it, I enjoyed this although the car could have no passengers- not even 1 front one! It eventually pissed me off though when I drove through a pothole last summer and put a nice dent in the floor pan. some sledgehammering and 200 od quid on replacing the standard suspension later she is now in fine fettle, and I plan to restore her fully when time and money allow. It is tempting to dream of fitting a G40 engine and uprating the chassis, getting it fully resprayed etc.. sadly this is pie in the sky for a piss poor student like me.
