1998 Volvo S40 SE 2.0

Summary:

Too much to pay for it's performance

Faults:

No problems have so far occured on the car.

General Comments:

This car is a terrible performer.

It is slow and bulky.

Performances are poor to average.

Handling is OK - actually gets better in the wet.

Gets better in terms of power when up to 90 mph - engine sounds better and more relaxed.

Dealers have always been good.

Car needs to be quicker, much quicker, have better handling.

It deserves to compete with the likes of Saab and BMW, but it can't because its too slow.

1998 Volvo S40 CD 2.0 injection

Summary:

Stylish sporty saloon- and reliable!

Faults:

Leaky fuel unions- fixed by dealer.

Gear lever rubber mountings worn- (common for pre-99 S40's) £40 job by dealer.

Some broken trim on the driver's seat- cheap and easy to replace.

"Graunching" from the front suspension struts. Worn bushings not cheap to replace.

General Comments:

Performance and reliability of the S40 far outstrips the 480ES I used to have. The car corners very well with no sign of stepping out.

The engine is EXTREMELY reliable and has never let me down. After service tuning, the car has managed 40.1 mpg. Average is 38.4 mpg, even with town driving.

Very comfortable interior on the CD model. Leather seats, adjustable driver seat level and steering wheel rake. However, my S40 is a pre-99 model and displays a certain harshness over badly-maintained roads. Post-99 models have improved suspension.

Visibility is generally good, but the front window pillars can obscure vision on hill junctions, and rearward vision can be difficult due to the high level of the boot lid.

Rear seat legroom is limited- tall rear seat passenger had better sit on the nearside!

The car is sometimes used to carry a disabled passenger- the rear springs had to be uprated to allow the loading of a heavy power-chair. The dealer fitted V40 springs to help compensate.

1998 Volvo S40 SE 1.9 turbo

Summary:

A 145mph flying tank

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong so far.

General Comments:

This car will eat Subaru's for breakfast.

The car feels solidly built, has stunning performance for just 1855 cc's and reasonable fuel economy for the performance.

I have yet to test the full potential of this car.

1998 Volvo S40 1.8 SE GDI 1.8 GDI

Summary:

Good car, but buy an automatic V40 1.8 GDI instead!

Faults:

New brakes pads.

Squeaky clutch.

Sticky gear change.

Squeaky fan belt.

General Comments:

Bought this car to handle my long commute to work and its great fuel consumption which was near a good diesel well done Mitsubishi for the GDI engine!

Trouble was that it had dodgy Renault parts (i.e gearbox) so the gear change was annoying sticking in third, and first gear was hard to find to.

Leather seats and cabin were excellent and the build quality plus refinement were good.

Hates corners and its not fun to punt around in, but there again it's a Volvo!

If only details such as handling and gearbox were improved would be a great car!

Depending on how old an S40 and the engine that's fitted to it, there seem to be two major types of manual gearbox:

One sort has reverse indicated on the shift pattern as being left of 1st. This gearbox is notchy, vague and generally poor.

One sort has reverse located below 5th on the shift pattern.

This gearbox is much smoother and precise.

It seems to vary as to which gearbox you get - generally, the bigger the engine and the newer the car, the more likely you are to have the second (better) gearbox.

I have an R reg 2.0 CD, and must say I don't find the gearbox a problem. There is a bit of play in the stick whilst in gear, and compared to the box of my old Prelude, the feel isn't too inspiring. Not a good box, but definitely not the worst I've used by a long shot!!

Totally agree with the handling too, although wider and lower profile tyres help a lot.
