1998 Volvo V40 T4 CD 1.9 turbo

Summary:

Sensible aethsetics - but manic driving

Faults:

Trip computer is faulty - reset button doesn't work so average speed, mpg etc. are inoperable.

Clock cannot be changed.

Ashtray flap fails to open.

General Comments:

Wolf in sheep's clothing - wife thinks I have a smart but sensible family estate!

A little disappointed with the pick-up when one puts a foot down - perhaps the turbo lag is more pronounced on this particular model. Once it does though it is quite quick. Torque steer is noticeable - need to hang on to the wheel. Ride is quite firm - you feel most of the bumps but then it's a sports model.

1998 Volvo V40 SE 2.0 petrol

Summary:

A practical high class tourer

Faults:

Engine management problems resulting in fluctuating and high idling speed. Took 3 visits to garage to correct.

Broken bonnet release cable.

General Comments:

Great to drive, excellent refined engine and lots of power from the light pressure turbo when required.

Excellent build quality and paintwork.

Classy interior.

Shame about the niggling faults.

Good load carrier without the bulk of the larger Volvo estates.

1998 Volvo V40 T4 CD 1.9 turbo

Faults:

ECU has been replaced 3 times - took until 27,000 miles to solve, turbo hose has blown off twice leaving me stranded, climate control not working for first 3 months, windows mist up.

Still problems with ECU engine stalls, holds back under load. When going well it is a refined car, but when you are along side an artic lorry and the engine decides to stop you begin to question your sanity.

General Comments:

My car has now done 67,000 miles and I have got used to the problems. It was even stolen when in for service at a Volvo main dealer, his help was appalling, and Volvo UK did not want to know. It is the worst garage customer service I have ever had in 25 years of new cars. It's my third and last Volvo - I should have learnt my lesson last time with my 850, it was crap - four gearboxes. I gave them another chance, bigger fool me.

I must agree with everything you say about poor after-sales service from Volvo, I would only consider another one if it was free.

I spent hours & many phone calls trying to sort out the transfer of my warranty to a new owner. The phone and fax number on my fancy looking warranty had been changed - no forwarding number given!

Volvo UK were no help at all. Eventually I managed to transfer the warranty - in all a truly miserable experience.

PS. I now own a Citroen - so far good service despite buying online & not from the dealer!!!
