1998 Volvo V70 T5 CD

Summary:

The best compromise of versatility, speed, comfort, safety and reliability I have found

Faults:

Only routine brakes & discs at 122,000.

Routine front suspension mounts at 140,000.

Headlight switch at 155,000.

Throttle cable at 160000.

Occasionally bulbs, but that happens with every car!

General Comments:

The best car I have ever had in 30 years.

It was in better condition when I first bought it at 120,000m than any brand new Rover 800 that I had had previously over the years of company cars.

No squeaks rattles or leaks at 160,000m.

Everything works like new, quite astonishing really.

Original exhaust still at 160,000m.

Warp drive performance if you need it, almost as quick as my old 220bhp Toyota MR2 Turbo though I do not often drive fast or spiritedly. Overtaking is like being on a motorbike, if you have it 'on boost'. Nothing can keep up with it. Have embarrassed many a hot hatch/BMW/Audi TT. You can very easily lose traction stepping off from a standing start though, and the TRACS system does nothing to help keep traction.

Handling and roundabouts are not its forte, but you do not think you are driving a huge car, just a large saloon. Much better handling than my previous car a Vauxhall Senator 3.0.

Huge load capacity & flexibility for luggage. Gets diving gear, sailing gear, IKEA boxes, you name it, in with no fuss and a low sill height.

The best sound system I have out of 20 or so cars that I have had.

Excellent seats though the drivers seat is now a bit saggy. Comfortable and quiet for the many long motorway journeys I make. Distance is no longer an issue.

Other trim and the leather is almost as new though on the front doors there is delamination of the material around the handles, due to leaving the windows down in the rain!

There are lots of 'clever touches' such as a clip for your parking permits in the side of the windscreen rather than having to stick them in and then scrape them off! Bits of rubber in trays to stop things rattling, etc. The designers actually thought about living with the car.

You feel very safe in it, and the reputation counts for a lot here. I am confident driving my children around in it. Probably safer than an SUV as it has less chance of rolling.

I actually prefer the styling of the V70 Classic, it is pure form and function, purposive and not too aggressive. I prefer it to the new rounded V70s.

I now own a 1998 V70 T5 CD auto estate (1998). I love it already and always finish a trip with a smile on my face.

Surprisingly, it does rattle and squeak (rear seats and trim?) more than my previous Volvo (2litre 850 SE Estate). Could this be due to a firmer suspension and larger wheels? The auto box is usually smooth, but occasionally gets caught out by a slight incline.

Also, compared with the 850, I find the T5 a bit noisier (again, the suspension and tires?) and the sound system duly suffers a bit.

Overall, a great car and I'm looking forward to doing more miles in it (...if my wallet can keep up with the fuel consumption..!).

1998 Volvo V70 T5 2.3

Summary:

Lovely car, too many rattles and squeaks

Faults:

Steering wheel replaced due to peeling plastic. Garage fixed it instantly under warranty; no fuss.

Numerous front light bulbs; learned to change them myself in seconds.

Brake discs replaced at great expense; should be cheaper.

Front tyres wear too fast.

Severe rattles, particularly of rear door, plus squeaky dashboard.

General Comments:

After 3 Audis, I had a bad one; build quality was slipping, so I got a Volvo V70 estate.

The car arrived; brand new and we loved it. Fast, quiet and comfortable. Low servicing costs, moderate fuel consumption, but mediocre roadholding (it's the old model). Ferocious acceleration; you can fishtail if you overdo it. No cup holder, gasp.

In its middle years, still a good car, but starting to squeak and rattle. Still comfortable and fast. Passengers love it; especially the sound system.

Now as it approaches 100,000 miles, a few paint chips, still very quick indeed, seat starting to sag a bit, servicing costs getting too steep; often £750, and the back door rattles badly enough to drive you crazy. Oh dear; it's not going to last as long as an Audi. The car goes well, but how can you concentrate; rattle, rattle, squeak and rattle...

Wish I had found this web site before buying my V70 GLT...

Great performance from the Turbo and transmission... but the squeaks drive me nuts... poor quality plastics, the dash and rattles from the rear are totally unacceptable from a car that probably cost about $40K new...

Hello, I have just browsed this site and enjoyed reading the comments. I am also the owner of a V70 XLT 10valve auto. Having had it for two years following one excellent Discovery and one which never left the dealers, I wish I had bought the Volvo earlier. A great car, no problems and I am 6ft 6 tall and find it the most comfortable driving position. I was also annoyed by the dashboard squeaks and have tried all remedies until two weeks ago.

I removed the top of the dashboard from inside, a simple job; from the outside removed the wiper mechanism which gave access to three bolts holding the dashboard lower section to the body. They were all loose, after several turns they tightened. Replaced the dash top. Hey presto. No rattles or squeaks on even the roughest of roads.

Summary:

A power crazed Audi-eater

General Comments:

The T5 is basically one of the most ultimate Q cars ever.

It will blow away almost any opposition you will come across.

Its faster than my old Subaru WRX Turbo, and that's saying something!

The car is so quiet and comfortable under normal conditions, then nail the throttle and the sweet sounding 5-pot projects you over the speed limit and just carries on accelerating, even if you floor it at 120 mph!

It is a very nice car to drive and live with.

Although it eats front tires!
