1996 Land Rover Discovery FXi 3.9

Summary:

I am crazy, but I love my Disco

Faults:

- Starter motor replaced.

- All wheel bearings replaced.

- Front right axle replaced.

- Steering gear need repair or replacement.

- Engines goes off when idle. I suspect injector problems as I have already changed all spark plugs.

- Remote control works intermittently.

- Water hose, thermostat and elbow replaced. Radiators cleaned, but still coolant leak; I have to add it every morning.

- Changed brake pad, but brake not fully reliable.

- Still there is engine oil leak, power steering fluid leak, coolant leak.

- Also changed stabilizer and suspension bush, but still noise is there.

General Comments:

I took the car to the desert one time and its performance was amazing. So I like the shape of this car, its powerfulness, but it may bankrupt me in a short time.

This car needs constant maintenance as every morning there is something going wrong. Compatible parts are available and inexpensive. But it is consuming too much time.

Anyway, I love it and I will do whatever I can to keep it running all time.

I have a 96 disco. It had a stall at idle or erratic idle on starting. It needed a throttle cleaning. This fixed the problem and was very cheap.

How much did all that repair cost exactly??

2003 Land Rover Discovery XS 4.0 V8 petrol

Summary:

Solidly built, comfortable and roomy 4x4 with a luxurious skin covering a utilitarian body

Faults:

When I bought the car, the Passenger Electric Seat was not working.

After about a week of owning the car, the Passenger Electric Window experienced problems. It made the most frightful noise and would refuse to go up or down and was stuck half-open. The dealer did not have the necessary parts to fix it so it was secured permanently closed.

It is difficult to see out the rear view mirror effectively when the headrest for the center seat is up. Even if it is down, the rear view visibility is a bit on the bad side and takes a bit of getting used to.

General Comments:

This is my first 4x4 and I am extremely happy with it. It is extremely comfortable and I love the high ride-height. It has plenty of power on tap (for a huge beast), and I would be stupid to compare it with the 325bhp 5.7l V8 car I owned prior to it. I mainly bought it for my wife and it more than adequately serves it's purpose.

I was completely aware of what I was getting myself into buying the Discovery, and one of the things you should consider will be the higher running costs. Although I have not had any yet, repairs will cost you on the higher side. I understand that brake pads wear out fairly quickly and will cost a fair amount to replace.

If you are moving from a sedan to a 4x4, then you may take a bit longer to adjust to it's size, especially when parking or moving around small spaces. The park-distance control sensors help very much in this, though.

I have not taken the car off-road yet, but will be doing so soon. I will either update this review or add a new one when I take it off road.

2000 Land Rover Discovery Series 2 V8

Summary:

Solid, safe and reliable

Faults:

The bonnet catch outer cable sheath seemed to crush preventing the bonnet catch from releasing. Dealer fixed it.

Nothing else has gone wrong.

General Comments:

Here in the United Arab Emirates the temperature in the summer can reach 50degrees C. The car has never (even with a full load and air con on) looked like being a problem. The temperature gauge remains normal and the air con is excellent. Its been off road and used for long trips loaded with camping and diving equipment. It has been off-road wadi bashing and always inspires confidence. It is very comfortable on long runs, cruises at high speed feeling very stable and relaxing. Petrol consumption is about 20 miles to the gallon, overall, including off road. As petrol is cheap here, economy is not as important as range as petrol stations can be far apart. I have owned other 4WD and this is the best for off-road performance. My previous vehicle, Hyundai Galloper, suffered from overheating in the summer and had several viscous drive fans replaced. The Discovery has better performance in sand than the Nissan Patrol I also owned in the past.

1996 Land Rover Discovery FXi 3.9 litre V8 petrol

Faults:

Steering pump oil leak, dashboard replaced under warranty by dealer although not requested, rear electric window mechanism replaced, mysterious "50th Anniversary" modifications to Middle East models which included free-flow grille, replacement alternator and what else we don't know.

General Comments:

Very pleased with this, our second Disco. We do exploit its off-road capabilities by thrashing around the desert at the weekends which it takes very well. Superb towing vehicle also for my heavy boat. Looking forward to having a shot in the new model.
