1996 Alfa Romeo 146 L 1.4 from Slovenia

Summary:

Stylish resemblance of classic Alfas

Faults:

Front left seat belt was getting stuck from the beginning (replaced under warranty).

Occasional problems with acceleration (the car tends to "suffocate"), which was not repaired until the end.

General Comments:

Very nice, stylish car. It's easy to ride, excellent steering, fabulous road holding.

I only don't understand why they put that outdated boxer engine in a new model (they should have waited for new 16 valve engines to come out). However the boxer is in a way fun, as long as you have patience with its roughness.

1996 Alfa Romeo 146 Ti 2.0 twin spark from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Show and plenty of go for surprisingly little dough

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

I've only had the car for a month or so but already I love it. It has a fantastic engine with the best engine note this side of a Ferrari. It looks absolutely wonderful and I can fit my two kids in the back with ease. It handles superbly, better than my Golf GTI used to.

The best thing about it must be the looks I get; people must think I spent a mint on it - which I didn't :)

1996 Alfa Romeo 146 Ti 2.0 16V TS from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Snarling Chariot

Faults:

On going problem with ABS warning light staying on.

Rear suspension dampers replaced at 38,000 miles.

Alarm sounds for no reason - even though it has been replaced once - given up using it.

General Comments:

Superb, underrated car. Engine is fantastic growling animal with a rasping, snarling exhaust.

Strong character from quick steering, taut handling and hard-charging engine. At its best on fast 'A' roads with sweeping bends. Very enjoyable car to drive - and look at, (especially in Alfa Red, of course). Best car I've driven.

My local dealer doesn't seem to be able to cope with anything more complicated than an oil change.

I have a 1996 Alfa Romeo ti. ABS light is always on (mechanics tell me it's safe, because there is no air-bag in there to have a fault).

Brilliant car to drive, but yes the heating control is a law unto itself, and I often have to drive in summer with the heating on full and all the windows open.

In 2012, it just past its MOT after brakes and some welding to flooring. Love this car.
