2002 Alfa Romeo 147 Distinctive 1.9 JTD turbo diesel from Argentina

Summary:

Great looks, Italian style and very reliable. An "ARMANI" car

Faults:

Had to replace shock absorbers (due to normal wear and tear).

Replace CD stereo (not reading anymore).

General Comments:

Excellent car.

Very reliable; much more than some Mercs I use to own.

Very cheap to drive, and great JTD engine.

Very reliable, I would definitely buy another Alfa Romeo.

I was scared at first of buying an Alfa, because of things said by people. I bought one, and now I know the problems of reliability were wrong, or from the past.

2002 Alfa Romeo 147 Turismo 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A good car spoiled by a few problems

Faults:

Gearbox failed at 30,000 miles, replaced under warranty.

Front alloy wheels started to buckle causing steering judder - both replaced under warranty.

Cylinder head gasket blew at 32,000 miles - repaired under warranty.

Funny smell from air conditioning unit sometimes - smells like urine!! Usually clears up after a period of operation though.

The odd false alarm warning light - esp rear fog light.

ABS sensor packed in - replaced under warranty.

Looks like drivers seat is starting to show signs of wear.

General Comments:

Overall I have had a fair few problems with this car even though it was purchased from a main dealer. These were all repaired / fixed under warranty and without quibble and I was always offered a hire car.

That said, I am impressed with the general build quality of the car. It is so far rattle and squeak free and feels really taut on the road. Handling is good, though performance from 1.6 is just about adequate. Compared to a Jaguar X type that I test drove recently (from a main dealer) I would rate the build quality of the Alfa way in excess of the Jag - the Jag had too many rattles and squeaks from the dashboard, excessive use of hard and shiny plastics that just looked cheap, nasty and tacky, plus in handling terms the Alfa would outrun it on a twisty road.

Your comments on the design of the 147 are so true. The BMW 1 series and Mazda 3 have borrowed heavily. But the BMW can't touch the interior design. My 147 has also proved problem free over nearly 2 years -- am I just lucky? Can't understand why it does so badly in the What Car reliability survey...

I own an 147 2000 cc for the last 2 years and I cannot, but agree with the other 2 commentators! Driving an 147 is an experience you have to live! Money-wise it is really worth more than any other German model (Audi-BMW...)

Looking forward for the 159 model to become available!

2002 Alfa Romeo 147 TS Lusso 1.6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Stylish, fast and fun

Faults:

Near side repeater light came off whilst washing. (But I do enjoy washing it).

General Comments:

I love almost everything about this car.

It looks stunning.

It handles superbly, you can just chuck it round bends all day long. (And if you want to chuck it round bends at night, then the way the dash lights up is just an added bonus).

The trim level is so luxurious. I don't have the leather and to be honest I think I prefer it with the soft, warm material they have used.

The Bose CD player is good, but it is nice to just turn it off and listen to that engine, even the 1.6 sounds (and is) grunty.

You always feel safe to. The traction control is excellent, there is also a computer operated device for keeping the car stable at all times, (can't remember the technical name) and you and the family are surrounded front and rear by airbags.

True, the running costs aren't all they could be and the rear seat and luggage space is not the largest in its class. But that's not the point. When I'm driving with a smile on my face, I look at my sporty steering wheel and see in the center that evocative badge. And you don't. Sort yourself out.

Your write up made me chuckle! I've had my 147 for about 9 months now and I still smile when I get in it, when I drive it, when I get out of it, etc. The car is just beautiful and worth every penny I spent.
