2000 Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed 2.0 from Guatemala

Summary:

Little bit expensive, Great, Fast, Reliable, Safe, and much more!

Faults:

I had some electrical problems with my lights, the chip went wrong.

General Comments:

The car is just great! Although the price is a little bit high, but you get more than what you paid.

Great performance, Racing breaks, nice leather Seats, Fast, and much more, it is impossible to state all the good thing this car has.

I got into a crash and although I crashed a car and then a cement light post at 120 Km/h, (app.70miles/h) I walked out of the car and realized nothing had happened to me. The airbags didn't burn me at all.

The car was unusable, everything destroyed.

2000 Alfa Romeo 156 Twin Spark Sportwagon 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good car let down by poor service agents

Faults:

Cam belt, main bearings and crankshaft.

General Comments:

These cars are perfectly OK if you ignore the Alfa Romeo service schedule. The Cam belts need doing every 36k not 72k. Not all dealers are aware of the renewed schedule and this is were the problems start.

At 48k my cam belt broke lunching most of the valves in the head. The repair bill was £1700 however it was covered under warranty. At 62k the car blew the bottom end of the engine which is a common side effect of the cam belt snapping. This unfortunately wasn't covered under warranty and cost me over 2k to fix.

The car was utterly brilliant apart from the problems associated with the belts. Sure there were problems, but nothing worth talking about. The cars are very stylish and far more exclusive than their dull German rivals.

If you can find a good specialist which knows how to service them, then you will have a pretty good car.

Good looking, fun to drive, but unreliable

Brake cable snapped at 15,000 miles.

CD player malfunctioned and had to be replaced at 19,000 miles.

Two cylinder heads needed replacing at 21,000 miles.

Engine blew head gasket and was replaced under warranty at 41,000 miles.

Was great looking and fun to drive...

But otherwise an unreliable and badly built car which disappointed me more than any other vehicle I have ever owned.

I will never buy an Alfa Romeo again.

2000 Alfa Romeo 156 Selespeed 2.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Great to drive, but no other redeeming features

Faults:

CD player stopped ejecting at 37,000 miles and had to be replaced.

Clutch plate broke at 40,000 miles.

Gear lever selector cable broke at 42,000 miles.

Air conditioning failed at 54,000 miles.

Gearbox became jammed in third gear at 57,000 miles.

Car broke down 10 times in the space of 2 years.

General Comments:

The 156 cost me £11,000 when I bought it.

Two years later I sold it for £7,000 and felt ripped off. Yes, it was a stylish car with great handling. But it was also badly built, unreliable and backed up by a bunch of dismal dealers.

2000 Alfa Romeo 156 2.5 from Chile

Summary:

Fantastic

Faults:

Nothing relevant, suspension requires some lubrication particularly in summer months to prevent becoming a bit noisy.

So far behaves as reliable as my good old Toyota.

The dealer service was not very good so I moved to a specialist Italian Workshop, they really know the car and the service is inexpensive, certainly cheaper than my wife's previous Honda CRV and Chevy Blazer and comparable with my old Toyota Hilux.

General Comments:

Extraordinary road handling and cornering.

The 2.5 engine makes it feel like a rocket. (my friends call it the "Ferrari of the poor"...)
