1996 Audi A4 2.8L Quattro 2.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

The best car I ever owned

Faults:

The leather steering wheel has been replaced twice (under warranty - $1000 each time) I now wear gloves when driving.

I had a problem with the car engine suddenly stalling... On days when it was cold in the morning (-5 to +5) then warmed up fast (by noon +20 to +25 Celcius) the car coolant temp would hit 91 degrees and the car would stall. I would have to wait 5 minutes for the coolant to cool down and then restart and drive. The dealer could never make the problem appear because even though I brought the car to them at 07:00am they would only go out and drive the car late in the morning...

Finally at 96,000KM check-up (timing belt changed) I asked them to replace the thermostat since the engine was comming apart anyways and replace the coolant. The thermostat that came out was open all the time. problem solved forever.

Suspension bars in the front needed replacing more times than I would like and they changed a gasket in the read differential 4 times (twice each side).

Always under warranty and the suspension bars when not on warranty the dealer offered me genuine parts or jobber parts (usually 20% cheaper).. The jobber suspension bars seem to last longer :-)

The CD changer is mounted on the roof of the trunk with skrews... It has fallen down twice so far. In fairness I did drive it over some rolling hills both times.

First time I brought it to the dealer who gave the changer to a "certified" radio place to fix the jammed CD in the machine... 1 week and $120.

Second time I took out the CD changer myself and brought it to a local radio place (Vitro-Plus) they fiddled with it for 10 minutes and charged me $10.

General Comments:

The AWD on this car really does make it handle like it's on rails. I've hit 90 degree corners at 90km/h without the tires even making a squeak.

My tires of preference Firestone Firehawk SZ50 225-50-16.

This is NOT a winter car. 50%-50% power front rear makes this car handle like a rear-wheel drive car on solid ice. I dented 2 mags "testing" the car my first winter. I got studded winter tires the next year.

This car is a machine! Just as fast as a mustang GT, just a civilized as a BMW, able to carry 2 adults and 2 kids in perfect comfort with all their camping luggage in the trunk.

1996 Audi A4 quattro 2.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

Comfortable, reliable, and classy

Faults:

Air bag lights come on after starting the car and stay on for about a minute.

Front tie rods needed to be replaced at 134,000 miles.

Drive shaft needed to be replaced also at 134,000 miles.

Front brakes wear quickly.

General Comments:

I have only had this car for about 2 months now, but I love it. It was definitely worth the price, but it was an inconvenience having to pay for all of the front end work to be done. Even thought it was expensive to have the repairs done, I would never regret buying this car. It handles great and is very classy looking, inside and out.

1996 Audi A4 1.8T from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The ideal family man compromise - luxury+performance+economy

Faults:

Punctured tyre.

Brakes needed replacing.

Aircon/blowers dodgy.

Rear ashtray cover loose.

Cupholders dodgy.

Leather around gearstick shows signs of wear.

General Comments:

Fantastic car - feels like a limousine at a slow pace, yet hungry enough for a little accelerator excitement - especially when the turbo kicks in.

Very smooth ride, totally forgiving - really does drive like it's on rails. never feels like it's losing control.

However that is also a downside - you never feel like you're fully driving this car. My previous car was a Scirocco, and oh boy, it felt like you were driving by the seat of your pants when you pushed it. The Audi doesn't care how hard you push it - but it is scary as you don't feel in complete control. The Scirocco was scary because you do feel you're in total control!

The 1.8 engine is more economical than the larger engines, but the turbo gives it much-needed poke, especially with the revs in the mid-range. With 150BHP, a top speed of 147MPH and around 30-35MPG it has all the right numbers. AND it's chippable to 225BHP should you want more power.

The looks are great - Audi have designed a classic here. Everything about its appearance combines quality, style and power.

The interior is spacious enough for any family, and the boot will swallow most loads.

In short, the closest I have found to perfection in a family car.
