1999 Audi A4 1.6 from Singapore

Summary:

Good ride and superb handling

Faults:

It has bad fuel burning efficiency when the engine is not warm up which means that after starting the engine from cold it is not advisable to turn off the engine within a short while. If you do that you will get the following scenario

For the next crank the engine will be vibrate a lot for around 20 seconds (till all the excess fuel being burned off).

General Comments:

It has superb road handling especially at the high speed.

The rear leg room is rather small, but the cargo volume is big enough.

The layout below the bonnet is neat and tidy.

1999 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8 T from North America

Summary:

A good near-luxury sport seden if you don't mind fixing it up the whole time.

Faults:

Driver side air bag unit went dead. (Replaced the whole airbag unit)

Both tie-rod gone bad.

Failed head light washer (both side).

Burnt out heated mirror (both side).

Trip computer display faded (Replaced the whole instrument cluster).

Broken sunroof switch.

Broken automatic shifting lever (bad spring).

CV boot busted.

Several rattles here and there.

Leaky sunroof. (out of warranty by then, too late to get them fixed)

General Comments:

Great car when everything works.

Very good value when comparing to other premium brands (MB, BMW, Cadillac...)

Very good sound on the stock stereo.

So-so fit and finish. (VW/Audi's aren't that good, trust me)

Needs more power.

Buzzing engine, not very refined.

Long waiting list on scheduling the service (about 10 days wait).

Very poor dealer service. (Technician tried to steal my Mobil 1 oil by putting dealer supplied oil into my car, got caught because I was standing outside watching him the whole time).

I agree with the comment about service. Have had ever-worsening service from an Audi dealer in Sacramento, CA. As the warranty expired the service was worse and worse. Have just spent $1,000+ on new timing belt and check-engine light is still on. Ugh!

1999 Audi A4 Quattro 1.8T from North America

Summary:

A great design, but not very durable

Faults:

The timing belt broke at 62,000 miles, destroying the entire motor. Audi did assist with the cost of the new motor, paying $2000 of the $5000 bill.

There is apparently a timing belt problem with the 1.8T motor from Audi and Volkswagen. To be safe, have the timing belt replaced at 50,000 miles. Audi recommends replacing the belt at 105,000 miles -- don't try to wait that long.

The headlight washer pump failed at about 60,000 miles ($130).

The driver's side airbag also failed at about 55,000 miles. Audi covered the cost to replace it, even though the warranty had expired.

General Comments:

This is a beautiful car that handles great. The features found in this car match that of more expensive cars. The 1.8T model could use more power, but the better gas mileage is a benefit. I would recommend buying the Audi Assured extended warranty if you buy an Audi, and selling the car before the warranty expires; these cars are very expensive to service.

It's interested you stated that the headlight washer pump when out around 60,000 miles because mine just went out and I'm at 62,000.

What are the comments on a 1997 A4 2.8... looking at buying one with 150k miles.

1999 Audi A4 SE 1.9 TDi 110bhp from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A comfortable and economical cruiser

Faults:

Time cannot be changed in the clock on the dashboard.

Warning light for brake-pads is constantly on although the pads are fine.

General Comments:

Car is very comfortable for long distance driving.

Economy is superb if the car is driven sensibly. 50 miles per gallon is easily attainable.

Quality of cabin is first class. It feels special to sit in.

Handling and performance are OK, but perhaps nothing special.

Handles safely, but not very exciting.

Performs reasonably for a diesel.

1999 Audi A4 SE 2.5 TDI V6 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Train Grande Vitesse!!!

Coolant expansion box split, oil leak from rocker cover, dealer replaced/repaired under warranty.

General Comments:

Burstless 150 BHP V6 engine, powerful, refined and smooth, averages 40+mpg, sharp brakes and light steering, although as it's the first Audi I've owned, this may be the norm!!

Very comfortable, satisfying drive, don't want to leave the car when I reach work!!

Some wear to the front Pirelli P6000's

Sharp and snatchy brakes are a common Audi trait but soon you soon get used to them.

24th Jul 2001, 09:42

Brakes can be sorted. It is a disc and pad problem. Same as VW (B5) Passat. Had mine changed under warranty. Became 'normal' progressive brakes. Perfectly weighted. Appears to be a quality problem.

1999 Audi A4 Quattro 2.8 from North America

Faults:

Nothing thru first 7,500 miles.

General Comments:

2.8 Manual with Quattro is a great combination. Would like a little more power, but this more than gets the job done. Great handling car, but small back seat.
