2001 Audi A4 1.8 turbo from North America

Summary:

Stylish performance sedan that is constantly in the shop

Faults:

I have gone through 5 bent rims.

Twice the ignition coils failed due to faulty parts the were eventually recalled.

A defective oil pump that caused my engine to seize.

The passenger seat mounting bolt keep coming lose so when I drive over a bump I hear rattling.

General Comments:

I have experienced many of the same problems that others have posted on this board. My 2001 A4 1.8 is extremely fun to drive, but definitely unreliable. I have had the car for roughly 3 years and it only has 35,000. The first year with it was great, but after that it's been an absolute nightmare.

I think the worst part of my Audi car owing experience is that I can never get prompt service at the dealerships that I have taken my car to. There is always some sort of wait to get your car serviced and even when my car was done, they tend to miss certain things (for example, they replaced my rims, but forgot to put one of the tire bolt covers on) which caused me to have to go back to the dealership and take more time off of work. When they are working on my car the dealership usually does not even have loaners to give me because they are all already being used.

2001 Audi A4 avant quattro sport 2.5 tdi from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Not cheap, but great fun and so sure footed

Faults:

Fuel tank pump went at 9000 miles, replaced after the part finally arrived from Germany.

At 76,000 miles the clutch fly wheel was found to be unbalanced and was replaced (outside warranty) and the clutch also has to be replaced as a result.

General Comments:

What a car, great to dive, averaged 38 miles per gallon over the full 106,000 miles despite the 'fun' driving style adopted.

Not only the above, but only 4 services (avg every 26k miles) is great.

Car holds the road and I give up before it does, quick and speedy in all conditions, Only one full set of tires in that period is great and a tribute to the 4 wheel drive system.

Only problem is the lack of rear space, but hey, with all this fun, whats a little cramped feeling.

This car does not like bumps or potholes.

I have had nothing, but good luck with this automobile. The handling is exceptional. I cannot ask for better brakes.

I agree completely with this author. I have a 2002 A4 and 2 coils have failed, but the car did make it to the next town. I like the many details Audi puts into the product. I did tour the Audi plant near Munich and the operation and quality of the build in these cars is unmatched. The gas mileage with my CVT is around 30mpg. The car is a true value at 30K.

It had 52000 on the clock when you bought it. Unfair to be so harsh when you can't know how the previous owner drove it.

It was most likely thrashed when you got it.

Regarding the 2001 Audi A4/Quattro. Audi is now replacing those engines for free. They are faulty. You may want to check with Audi since you had to replace engine in July. Maybe will all the problems they have had on this engine, they might reimburse you.

I was just driving my car down the road and the engine just stopped and would not re-start. Audi is replacing engine for free and it is not under warranty.
